As the Hoosiers finish their first week of camp on Aug. 11, senior linebacker Jake Powers spoke with IUHOOSIERS.com about his daily routine during preseason practice.
I woke up, and as a responsible teammate I made sure my roommate, Taylor Donnell, was awake as well. I went to breakfast, where I studied for a test in my media advertising class.
After breakfast, I went to meetings. We reviewed the films from last night's practice. I saw that we're starting to eliminate mistakes. We're starting to become sharper. We're starting to get more detailed with our discipline and the way we play. A lot of young guys are picking up a lot of things really quickly, and it's more review for the older guys.
Following meetings, I went back to the locker room and studied. At 10:30, I took my test. Eric McClurg is in my class as well. The test went great. It feels good to be over with class for a few more weeks. It was our final exam, but it was on material covered over just the last four weeks.
We came back to the stadium following the test and lifted (which went very well), and then we went to lunch.
After lunch, I went back to the hotel and took a 40-minute nap.
All morning, I drank Gatorade constantly. You want to get all your liquids in before practice.
I came back to the stadium and jumped into the hot tub and stretched out. I went to (trainer) Dean Kleinschmidt, who taped me up before our special teams meetings at 2:30 p.m.
In special teams meetings, we discussed punt coverage and went over the films from yesterday's practice. We are doing a good job eliminating mistakes.
During practice, we always start by bringing the team together in the end zone, which is kind of a unity thing. We always want to come out on the field ready and begin with specialists, punting and kicking. The team went through punt coverage, reviewing what we watched in film. Then we went to stretch with our positions. I go stretch with the linebackers, and there's always some pretty good conversation in the stretch circle. We go through our warm-up drills, and then back to specialists and go through punt before going back to specialists, where I'll work with the linebackers on linebacker drills.
Today, we were working on our blitzes. We have installed a lot of our blitzes, and now what we are doing is running those blitzes out of different types of fronts. For me, it's a lot of different responsibilities but it's easy to remember after a lot of repetitions. It went pretty well.
Team drills were awesome. Team is always the most fun when we all come together. Everyone is working for that job, so everyone starts popping pads. It's a good time.
