Bloomington, Ind. - Senior Laura McGaffigan and junior Brianna Williams both advanced after the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Summer National Championships.
McGaffigan, who earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament, defeated Boston University's Danielle Abraham 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. She then downed Kristin Messmer of Ohio State 7-6, 6-3.
Williams, seeded ninth, won a tough opening match against Barbara Zidek of William and Mary 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (7). She advanced with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Mallory Weber (HS).
Other players who represented Indiana included sophomores Sigrid Fischer and Stephanie Heller, as well as incoming freshman Erin Clark.
Indiana head coach Lin Loring is the ITA's Summer Tournament founder and national tournament director. Over 20,000 student-athletes have participated in the summer action since the tournament's inception.
The winners of the ITA's Summer National Championship will earn bids to the first national tournaments of the season, the ITA All-American Championships.
