BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Action concluded at the second day of the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Summer National Championships at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts on Aug. 13. Junior Brianna Williams and sophomore Sigrid Fischer highlighted the day for Indiana by advancing to the semifinals of the women's doubles bracket.
Williams and Fischer, the No. 5 seed, defeated Christina Amo and Imke Reimers, 8-4, to advance to the final four of the doubles draw. Senior Laura McGaffigan and sophomore Stephanie Heller advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket before falling to Notre Dame's Brooke Buck and Kelcy Teft, 8-2.
Last season, former Hoosier Sarah Batty and McGaffigan claimed the Summer Championship doubles title with an 8-3 win over North Carolina's Meg Fanjoy and Austin Smith, becoming the first Hoosier doubles team to earn a bid to the ITA All-American Tournament since Deborah Edelman and Rachel Epstein accomplished the feat in 1992.
In singles play, Heller advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's consolation bracket after topping North Carolina's Meg Fanjoy, 6-1,7-5, and Northwestern's Lauren Lui, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0(6). Incoming freshman Erin Clark will join Heller in the quarterfinals after defeating Carrie Jeanmaire from Western Michigan, 0-6,6-3,1-0(4).
Matches begin on Monday at 8 a.m., at the IU Varsity Tennis Courts.
At the end of each day, results will be available on IUHOOSIERS.com.
