Hoosiers See Success In Summer Events

Bloomington, Ind. Throughout the summer months, members of the Indiana men's golf team enjoyed great success at a variety of local, national and international tournaments. The Hoosiers combined to win six events around the world and had numerous top-10 finishes throughout the summer as well. Head coach Mike Mayer is looking for this progress to translate over to strong performances in the upcoming season.
Sophomore Seth Brandon had a phenomenal summer of golf, capturing the title at the Southeastern Amateur Championship with a 72-hole total of 276 (70-69-66-71) as well as the title at the North Georgia Invitational after carding a 137 (68-69). With rounds of 72 and 69, Brandon finished 15th in the stroke play portion of the North and South Amateur at Pinehurst and advanced to match play. He also finished 58th at the Western Amateur Championship and tied for 66th at the Southern Amateur.
Fellow sophomore Brandon Pike qualified for the USGA Amateur Public Links Championship, carding a 150 (74-76) to advance to match play in the event. He also captured the Indiana Public Links Championship after an eight under par round of 62 and finished 31st at the Indiana Amateur Championship. Pike, who was named to the Indiana Challenge Cup amateur team this summer, is an alternate for the U.S. Amateur Championship after shooting a 152 (74-78) in qualifying.
Drew Allenspach shot a 71 to qualify for the Southern Amateur Championship, and the sophomore finished in a tie for 67th at the Texas State Open with a 144 (72-72). He also tied for 125th at the North and South Amateur after carding rounds of 74 and 78.
In international competition, junior Santiago Quirarte finished as the low amateur at the Tijuana Open. His third place finish in the event came when he carded a 54-hole score of 211 (73-66-72). He also finished fourth overall in Mexico National World Amateur Championship qualifications.
Sophomore Eric Serch captured the Mercedes Invitational title with a 285 total (76-72-71-66) and won the Marato de Fontanals in his native Spain with a 72-hole score of 283 (68-74-70-71). Serch also placed second at the Vallromanes Invitational after rounds of 77 and 75 and finished 18th at the Cameonato Internacional de Canarias.
Serch's fellow Spaniard, sophomore Jorge Campillo, led the Spanish National Team to victory at the European Under-21 Team Championships, shooting 71-72 in stroke play before winning all of his matches in the match play portion of the event. He also finished third at the Copa Biarritz with a 72-hole total of 268 (67-68-63-70) and finished fourth at the Campeonatio Internacional de Canarias with a 299 total (80-76-76-67).
Back on this side of the Atlantic, senior Aaron Harrell won the Fidra Collegiate Series Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. with a 145 (72-69) and finished seventh at the Fidra Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind., with a 156. He also tied for 48th at the Indiana Open Championships. Fellow senior Tad Sacheck shot a 73 in qualifying at the Indiana Match Play Championship, advancing to match play before falling bowing out in the quarterfinals.
The lone member of the freshman class, Alex Martin prepared for his first collegiate season by finishing in a tie for 11th at the Ohio Open Championship. His 209 total (70-66-73) tied for low amateur at the event. Martin also tied for second in the stroke play portion of the Cincinnati Men's Met Championship with rounds of 72 and 69, advancing to match play where he fell in the quarterfinals. Like Pike, Martin is an alternate for the U.S. Amateur Championship after carding a 141 (71-70) in qualifying.
