Indiana Knocks Off Top-Ranked Maryland in Exhibition, 1-0

Fort Wayne, Ind. - Indiana's 12th-ranked men's soccer squad downed top-ranked defending NCAA champion Maryland on Aug. 18, 1-0, in an exhibition game at IPFW's Soccer Showcase.
For the second straight exhibition game, sophomore reserve Brian Ackley scored the game-winner in a 1-0 contest. Redshirt freshman Darren Yeagle set up Ackley's decisive strike with a pass from the right side just a few feet from the end line. Ackley corralled the pass just outside the six-yard box and knocked it past Maryland keeper Chris Seitz at the 74:47 mark to put the Hoosiers on the board.
Head coach Mike Freitag was pleased with the way that the team played against Maryland.
"At this stage in preseason we have a quality team, a good team," said Freitag. "It was nice to see a fresh team tonight. I am very happy at this stage in the season.
"Our offense was good. They created quality chances to score. I am happy with the way they played tonight."
Indiana keepers Chris Munroe and Chay Cain both played a half in the net for the Hoosiers, combining for eight saves to keep the Terrapins scoreless. Munroe registered three saves in the first half, while Cain stopped five shots in the second stanza.
The Hoosiers were outshot in the game, 12-10, but had several decent scoring chances. John Michael Hayden put a shot on frame on a set piece from just outside the penalty box in the 54th minute, but Seitz was there to make the stop with a diving effort to his right.
Senior Kevin Robson nearly scored the game's first goal in the 69th minute, sending a shot on target with Seitz out of the net, but Maryland defender Matt Beckman was there to make the save.
Maryland also had some good scoring chances, but was thwarted every time. In the 24th minute, Drew Yates nodded a shot on goal off a Terrapin corner kick, but Munroe was there to make the close-range stop. Maryland's Stephen King put a low line drive on goal in the 61st minute, but Cain scooped it up to keep the game scoreless.
The Terrapins' had one final shot at salvaging a draw in the last minute of play, but Cain was again able to come up with a save on Spencer Allen's low liner.
The Hoosiers begin the regular season on Friday, Aug. 25 against No. 8 Creighton in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament at Notre Dame University.
