Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball squad will open the 2006 season with an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 19 between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 in the SRSC. The annual scrimmage will give the team an opportunity to compete in a controlled contest prior to its Aug. 25 season opener at the West Virginia Tournament.
The intrasquad scrimmage will showcase a team that returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from a year ago. The Hoosiers return to the court in 2006 with a young, but experienced, team that is also highlighted by a group of three talented newcomers. Senior libero Sara Diehl returns to anchor a defense for which she picked up 360 digs a year ago, the seventh-highest total in an individual season in program history. On the offensive side, sophomore Erica Short returns to the court for IU after a phenominal freshman campaign that saw her record a team-high 398 kills and finish 10th in the Big Ten with an average of 3.46 kills per game.
In addition to the experienced players returning to the squad, the Hoosiers also welcome three newcomers that earned Honorable Mention among the PrepVolleyball.com Top Recruiting Classes for 2006. Freshmen Allison Regas (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Kerstin Rodgers (Carlsbad, Calif.) will join junior Caitlin Watts, a transfer from Miami (Ohio), on the court for IU this season.
The Hoosiers will open the West Virginia Tournament by facing off against Akron at 5:00 p.m. and will wrap up the tournament on Saturday, Aug. 26 with matches against Oakland at 2:30 p.m. and West Virginia at 8:00 p.m.
