FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team came away victorious in its lone exhibition match of the 2006 season, topping Indiana State 4-0 in the IPFW Soccer Showcase on Saturday, Aug. 19.
Senior midfielder Ali Brown had a goal and two assists for the Hoosiers, while junior Kristin Radcliffe added a goal and an assist in the contest. Freshmen Christie Kotynski and Jessica Boots added the other two goals for the Hoosiers in the contest.
The two teams battled back-and-forth for the opening 30 minutes, with each team getting a number of solid chances, but the goalkeepers were able to keep the ball out of the net. The Hoosiers then began to take over in the final 10 minutes of the first half, and exploded for three goals to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room.
Indiana got its first corner of the match in the 36th minute, and Kotynski cashed in on it to break the ice for the Hoosiers. Brown served the ball from the left corner, and Kotynski came in along the back post, heading it past Sycamore keeper Rachel Rudzis to open the scoring.
IU did not have to wait long to see its second goal of the contest, as just over two minutes later the Hoosiers struck again to take a 2-0 lead. Radcliffe had the ball 25 yards out and crossed a pass behind the ISU defense to a wide-open Brown on the left side. Brown brought the ball into the box, worked free of her defender, and chipped a goal over Rudzis to extend the IU lead to two.
The Hoosiers were not finished, though, and tallied their final goal of the half with just 56 seconds remaining in the frame. After a failed corner attempt, junior Beverly Markwort played a cross-field ball to Brown on the left side. Brown, from 30 yards out, crossed a ball back into the box, and Boots banged a header into the near side to make the score 3-0 for Indiana.
IU continued its scoring into the second half, with Radcliffe netting her first goal of the contest. Freshman Kathryn Zachman sent a long ball up the right side that senior Megan Pipkens chased down in the far right corner. Pipkens then cut to the net, drawing out the keeper, and fed it to Radcliffe, who tapped it home to put the Hoosiers up 4-0.
Stacey Van Boxmeer played in net for the first 59:23 of the contest, making four saves, before yielding her post to sophomore Megan Reinhardt. Reinhardt made two saves, including a brilliant point-blank save off the Sycamores' Rachel Gordon in the 68th minute.
IU outshot its fellow state school 18-9 in the contest, including a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Hoosier defense limited ISU to just two corner kicks, while IU was awarded five.
Indiana will begin its regular season against No. 10 (National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll) California in the Wisconsin Soccer Invitational on Friday, Aug. 25, in Madison, Wisc. The Hoosiers will also take on Creighton on Sunday, Aug. 27, in their second match of the weekend affair.
