Throughout the 2006 preseason, IUHOOSIERS.com will be taking an insider's look at the women's soccer team. Each day from Aug. 8-23, a different member of the team will be keeping a diary of the day's events. The entry for Friday, Aug. 18 is by junior Katy Stewart:
Today was our last full day of practice before our first chance to play an opponent other than ourselves. We had our first training session at 9 a.m. on the practice field.
It managed to rain about 90 of the 120 minutes we were playing, but it really seemed to increase our intensity. After an arousing continuous movement warm-up led by Coach Rickerby, we spent some time on possession and did a crossing drill to try to perfect our services into the box.
The possession drill started out a little slow and Coach Lyon did not hesitate to put us on the sideline to run a few sprints to get our bodies moving and our heads ready to play. It was not sweet, but it really focused us for the rest of the training session.
We rounded out the morning session with a shooting drill, which turned into a competition between upperclassmen and underclassmen. Us old ladies only barely outnumber the youngins, but thanks to my good friend junior Kate Nierman we managed to pull out the victory. There were lots of laughs and great shots, but spectacular goalkeeping by Stacey Van Boxmeer and Megan Reinhardt made it difficult to get anything in the back of the net.
Coach Lyon decided to give us the afternoon session off to help get our legs back before our preseason scrimmage Saturday against Indiana State. This was a much-needed break and gave us some extra time to enjoy our third team-building activity of the preseason.
Tonight we introduced the freshmen to an IU women's soccer tradition, "Would you rather?" Everyone participated and enjoyed the game, but the highlight (as it has been for the past three years) was the performance of senior Lauren Lamping. She is one special girl.
We are definitely ready to beat up on somebody else, so Indiana State better be ready for us tomorrow!
