Medinah, Ill. - Shaun Micheel, a 1991 IU graduate and Big Ten Champion, placed second at the 88th PGA Championship on Sunday. Micheel, the 2003 PGA Champion, wrapped up the tournament with a 13-under par total of 275 after carding a 69 in the final round at Medinah Country Club.
Entering the last day of play in a tie for fifth at 10-under par, Micheel opened Sunday's round with a birdie at the par-4 opening hole. A bogey at the fourth dropped Micheel back to 10-under for the championship, but the Cordova, Tenn., native birdied the fifth hole and the ninth to make the turn at 12-under par.
The former Hoosier All-America opened the back nine with a par on 10 and a birdie at 11 to move to 3-under par on the day and 13-under for the tournament. Micheel bogied the 12 hole to drop a shot, but he came roaring back on the 13th. After his tee shot on the par-3 ended up in the rough long, Micheel chipped in from across the green to card a birdie and move back to 13-under for the championship. Another birdie, this time at the 14th, moved him to 14-under, where he stayed until closing out the round with a bogey on the 18th hole for his 69.
For the tournament, Micheel's first top-10 finish on the PGA Tour this season and his fifth top-25 of the year, he turned in rounds of 69-70-67-69 for his 275 total.
The only major championship winner in IU golf history, Micheel trailed only three-time PGA Champion Tiger Woods at the conclusion of play. He finished one stroke ahead of Sergio Garcia, Luke Donald and Adam Scott, who tied for third position at 12-under par.
