SETTING THE SCENE
The Indiana women's soccer team will kick off their 2006 season at the Wisconsin Soccer Invitational from Friday. Aug. 25-Sunday, Aug. 27. IU will go head-to-head with No. 10 (National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll) California and 2005 NCAA Tournament participant Creighton in the weekend event.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Indiana meets both California and Creighton for the first time in the history of the schools. IU head coach Mick Lyon holds a career 11-2-0 record against the Blue Jays, which he racked up in his time patrolling the sidelines at Evansville. Lyon has never faced the Bears.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
California wrapped up its 2005 campaign with a trip to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, where it fell to Florida State 2-1. The Bears went 16-4-2 on the season, including a second-place finish in the Pac-10. Cal allowed just .475 goals per game last season, finishing seventh in the nation in that category.
The Bears posted shutouts in 15 of their 22 contests and return three starters, including preseason All-American Courtney Hooker, on the back line, but also graduated four of its top five scorers from the 2005 season.
SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS
The Blue Jays won the Missouri Valley Conference title in 2005 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where they were topped 1-0 by Nebraska. Creighton split its two exhibitions this year, topping Minnesota 2-1 on Saturday, Aug. 19 after a 1-0 loss to North Dakota State on Thursday, Aug. 17.
Creighton returns 18 letterwinners, including nine starters, from the 2005 squad. Leading the Jays is senior Emily Munn, a 2005 first team All-MVC selection, and the Peetz sisters - juniors Ally and Katie and freshman Anne. Ally notched two assists as a defender last season, while Katie had six goals, second-most on the team, in 2005. Anne scored both of Creighton's goals in the 2-1 victory over Minnesota.

HOOSIERS TAKE OPENER
The Indiana women's soccer team came away victorious in its lone exhibition match of the 2006 season, topping Indiana State 4-0 in the IPFW Soccer Showcase on Saturday, Aug. 19. Senior midfielder Ali Brown had a goal and two assists for the Hoosiers, while junior Kristin Radcliffe added a goal and an assist in the contest. Freshmen Christie Kotynski and Jessica Boots added the other two goals for the Hoosiers in the contest.
The Hoosiers scored three goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half to blow a scoreless game wide-open and take command of the contest. Freshman Christie Kotynski opened the scoring in the 36th minute by heading home a Brown corner. Brown followed that up with a goal in the 38th minute, and freshman Jessica Boots netted a header with 56 seconds remaining in the half to give IU a commanding 3-0 lead.
IU continued its scoring into the second half, with Radcliffe netting her first goal of the contest. Freshman Kathryn Zachman sent a long ball up the right side that senior Megan Pipkens chased down in the far right corner. Pipkens then cut to the net, drawing out the keeper, and fed it to Radcliffe, who tapped it home to put the Hoosiers up 4-0 in the 53rd minute.
Stacey Van Boxmeer played in net for the first 59:23 of the contest, making four saves, before yielding her post to sophomore Megan Reinhardt. Reinhardt made two saves, including a brilliant point-blank save off the Sycamores' Rachel Gordon in the 68th minute.
HOOSIERS PICKED NINTH
The Indiana women's soccer team has been pegged to finish ninth in the Big Ten Conference in the annual preseason poll, voted on by the league's coaches and announced by the conference office on Monday, Aug. 21. Penn State, coming off a season where it went 23-0-2, was tabbed to finish first, followed by Illinois and Purdue.
The Hoosiers finished the 2005 season 7-10-2 with a 3-6-1 mark in Big Ten play. That placed IU sixth in the conference, marking the Hoosiers' fourth consecutive trip to the Big Ten Tournament. The 2006 Hoosiers return 16 letterwinners and seven starters from last year's squad.

COBRAS JUST SHY
Four current Hoosiers - senior Ali Brown, juniors Katy Stewart and Suzie Teixeira and sophomore Megan Reinhardt - and undergraduate assistant coach Lauren Fabbro helped the Carmel United Cobras to a national runner-up finish at the USASA (United States Amateur Soccer Association) Under-23 championships. The Cobras found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 overtime loss to defending national champion Real Colorado on Sunday, Aug. 6, in Frisco, Texas.
The Cobras took a 2-1 lead in the closing minutes of the first overtime of the national championship contest, but Real got a pair of tallies in the second overtime to take home the U-23 championship. Reinhardt played the entire game in net for the Cobras, while Brown helped set up Carmel's second goal of the contest.
The Cobras advanced to the national finals by defeating the Pennsylvania Bucks on Friday, Aug. 4, with three second-half goals in a come-from-behind 3-2 victory to earn a spot in the national finals. Brown scored a goal and assisted on both others for Carmel, while Reinhardt made six saves in net.
Carmel earlier defeated teams from Illinois (3-1) and Kansas (5-2) to win the Region II championship and earn a spot in the semi-finals.
CONSISTENTLY HELPING
Senior midfielder Ali Brown has had an incredibly consistent career, statistically speaking, for the the Hoosiers. In each of her three seasons for the Hoosier midfield, Brown has tallied three assists. In her freshman campaign, the Carmel, Ind., product tallied two goals, the only two scores in her IU career. Brown scored a goal and added two assists in IU's 4-0 exhibition victory over Indiana State on Saturday
COMING THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH
Junior forward Kristin Radcliffe returns for the Hoosiers in 2006 after finishing second on the team with three goals in 2005. Her seven points were the third-most among Hoosiers as well. Radcliffe had a flair for the dramatic in 2005, as all three of her tallies went for game-winners. The Wheaton, Ill., native tallied the game-winners against Xavier, Butler and Michigan in 2005. She added an assist on Kristen Zmijewski's goal against the Musketeers as well.
PATROLLING THE BACK
With the graduation of defensive mainstays Robin Barker and Courtney O'Bryan, the Hoosiers will look to senior Lauren Lamping and junior Jenna Babcock to anchor a young but talented defense in 2006. Lamping started 18 games for the Hoosiers last year, while Babcock started 14. Each posted one assist in 2005.
KEEPING IT STRONG
With Lauren Fabbro departed due to graduation, junior Stacey Van Boxmeer and sophomore Megan Reinhardt will take over the goalkeeping duties in 2006. Van Boxmeer appeared in 13 games last season, totalling a 2.03 goals against average and a .707 save percentage. The former keeper for the Canadian national team also played between the pipes for the Hoosiers in 2003, when she went 5-5-1 with a 0.95 goals against average.
Reinhardt has yet to play a regular-season contest for the Hoosiers, but the Indianapolis native had a strong spring and was a standout for the Carmel Cobras' U-23 team, which advanced to the national championship game.
MOVIN' ON UP
Junior Beverly Markwort, a 2004 Big Ten All-Freshman selection on defense for the Hoosiers, has been moved up to the midfield for the 2006 campaign. The speedy Markwort has one career assist from her defensive position.
CLIMBING THE LADDER
The Hoosiers are approaching a number of program milestones, both individually and as a team. Senior forward Megan Pipkens is tied for eighth on the Hoosiers in career assists (10) and is ninth in career shots (102). The Holt, Mich., native is just one assist behind Kelly Kram for seventh and two behind Kris Fosdick on the all-time list. Junior Kristin Radcliffe is tied for eighth all-time in game-winning goals (four) and needs just two more to vault into the top five. Junior Stacey Van Boxmeer's 72 career saves are the fifth-most all time, but the Collingwood, Ont., is less than 20 percent of the way to the all-time record, as Merit Elzey recorded 442 saves in her career as a Hoosier.
ARE YOU NEW HERE?
The Hoosiers welcome nine incoming freshmen to the 2006 squad, several of which are expected to have a significant impact. On defense, IU will look to Jessica Boots, Taylor Fallon, Kelly Lawrence and Kathryn Zachman; at midfield, the Hoosiers will feature Christie Kotynski and Natalie O' Bryan; and at forward, the Hoosiers should see time from Kristin Arnold, Jenny Ball and Liz Holby.
