Tournament Diary Part 2: Julian Dieterle

The Indiana men's soccer team participated in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament Aug. 25-27 in South Bend, Ind. After the Hoosiers' win over Alabama-Birmingham, senior back Julian Dieterle, who scored the game-winning goal, sat down with IUHOOSIERS.com to wrap up his thoughts on the tournament.
We had a good day of rest Saturday, then woke up this morning and felt we were ready to go. It was nice because the game was early. You don't have too much downtime, you get a good meal in, talk about the game and go out and play. You don't have to sit around the hotel all day.
You get a goal early, as we did against UAB, definitely takes a little bit of the sting out of the game. You feel good about things. We hit a wall about 25 minutes in; our legs were dragging a little bit. Because we knew we had that goal, we slowed down a little bit, and the game got a little sloppy. It was a good thing to have as insurance, but I think we sat on it. It's always good to score early though.
Coach (Freitag) had a few words at halftime and got us going. I think we fell asleep a little bit. We hit a wall, we were dragging a little bit, and they got a goal before halftime. The goal was almost a blessing in disguise because it woke us up. We came out and responded well.
It was good. I scored the goal and looked up and saw there were less than two minutes left and I thought - `thank goodness, we're not going back into overtime.' I don't know if my legs could have handled it. So it was good to get a goal. We had a lot of chances and finally finished up on one.
We've got two tough games next weekend; we'll get a good week of training in. Next on the schedule is Connecticut. Every year they're a good team, in and out. They're always going to play us tough. We're excited.
Classes start on Monday. It's good for things to get started. You get on a schedule, and things get laid out for you. It's nice. I'm ready to get started for sure.
