Indiana Moves Up In National Rankings

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University men's soccer team moved up in the national rankings this week after starting the season with wins over No. 8 Creighton and UAB.
The Hoosiers (2-0-0) are ranked No. 5 by Soccer Times. College Soccer News puts Indiana at No. 6, while Soccer America gives the team a No. 8 ranking.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) will put out its next poll on Sept. 5. The Hoosiers are ranked 12th in the preseason poll.
The Hoosiers defeated Creighton 1-0 in double overtime and UAB 2-1 to win the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind. on Sunday, Aug. 27.
Senior Julian Dieterle and sophomore Brian Ackley were named Defensive and Offensive MVP of the tournament, respectively. Senior Josh Tudela and junior Greg Stevning also made the all-tournament team.
Additionally, Ackley was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and National Player of the Week by College Soccer News.
Indiana finished first in the final tournament standings with six points, followed by UAB (three points), Notre Dame (three points) and Creighton (zero points).
Ackley has scored goals in each of the four games that Indiana has played this year. He tallied a goal in each exhibition game against Maryland and UIC, and extended his scoring streak into the regular season with a header in the 106th minute in the win over Creighton. He also scored a goal against UAB.
Dieterle scored the game-winning goal against UAB in the 89th minute. Throughout the weekend, senior midfielder John Michael Hayden led the team with two assists, while Stevning and freshman Darren Yeagle each had one assist.
The Hoosiers return home on Friday, Sept. 1, to face No. 2 Connecticut in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
