Throughout the week, IUHOOSIERS.com will take a look at what life is like for the new members of the women's golf team in their first week on campus. Freshman Anita Gahir, a native of Thornhill, Ontario, shared her experiences from Tuesday and Wednesday.
The first couple days at IU have been hectic, but none-the-less, exciting. I have gotten settled into my dorm room very comfortably and am quickly getting used to all of the campus surroundings. The food courts have been a big change for me, but a very convenient way to grab a bite before class or after practice. There's plenty of choices, so I can try something new everyday. Starting classes has been a new experience for me, but they are becoming easy to get used to. The large classes allow me to meet new people everyday, which is always fun. The campus itself is starting to feel more like home everyday, as I am trying to spend as much time as possible exploring. Being here in Indiana for four years seemed like a long time, but the last week has flown by, and I hear time here goes by very quickly.
Tuesday, Aug. 29th was my second day of classes and also the golf team's equipment pick-up day. There was a lot of excitement as we waited for our clothes, rain gear, shoes and much more. Following this was an academic meeting, informing us about important things, such as tutors, mentors, study hours etc. We received handbooks, and it was clear to me then that I was really here and school and the golf season had started.
Wednesday, Aug. 30th included classes in the morning and the golf team's first practice. We got helpful information about our diet and tips on how to stay energized while playing. For our first practice, we worked on putting and discussed ways to stay positive and focused while doing so. I met with coaches Wallman and Brophy, and reflected on this past summer and my plans for this upcoming season.
The days have been really fun for me, as I've been spending time with the team and meeting a lot of new people in my classes. I really look forward to my time here at IU, and can't wait until we start competing.
