BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University Assistant Athletics Trainer Joe Lueken has been named the 2006 Indiana Athletic Trainer of the Year for the college/university setting by the Indiana Athletics Trainers Association (IATA), the organization announced recently. The IATA was founded in 1984, and its more than 1,000 members are committed to providing quality healthcare for Hoosiers and advancing the profession of athletic training.
Associate Athletics Director Jack Garrett said that the IATA could not have made a better choice for this year's recipient.
"This is an appropriate and well-deserved honor for Joe," Garrett said. "Whether he is teaching in an academic classroom, working on the athletic field with an injured student athlete, or simply sharing advice with an uncertain student, Joe always has the students' best interests at heart. When he speaks there is substance in the message that he delivers. His credibility is tremendous and the student athletes really seem to appreciate the energy, the honesty, and the enthusiasm that he brings to our program on a daily basis. Again, Joe is very deserving of this honor and I'm glad that his peers recognize his talents."
Lueken has served as an athletic trainer at Indiana for the past nine years and also has worked with the track and field, football and baseball teams. In addition, he is an instructor and teaches within the curriculum of the athletic training programs.
Lueken previously served as an athletic trainer for the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs. He was responsible for team preparation, practice and competitive coverage for various teams, international travel and administrative responsibilities for the Sports Medicine clinic.
Lueken earned a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports sciences from Indiana in 1987 and a master's from Arizona in 1990. He currently serves on the board of directors from the USOC's Sports Medicine Society and the Diabetes Youth Foundation.
He and his wife, Pam, are the parents of two daughters, Mckenzie and Abbie. The family resides in Bloomington.
