With the Hoosiers taking part in their first practice of the season in shoulder pads on Aug. 9, senior wide receiver Lance Bennett took a few minutes to talk to IUHOOSIERS.com. Here's what a typical day in his life is like as he prepares for his final season as a Hoosier.
"Today is my birthday. We started off the day with breakfast at 6:40 a.m., followed by meetings at 8 a.m. At the meeting, we watched film of the team and the 7-on-7 periods from yesterday. After we went over the film, the offense worked on installing some new plays.
We had a short break in the day, and everybody tries to rest up as much as they can. I had a lot of phone calls since it's my birthday, so today I didn't rest as much as I normally do.
Lunch starts at 12:30 p.m., then if you need treatment you get it after lunch. I didn't have to get treatment. Around 4 p.m., I went to the kick off/return meeting, while the wide receivers and the quarterbacks came out to the field to work on the new plays we talked about in the morning meeting.
After meetings, we hit the field for practice. We started off with special teams, then I moved to individual drills with the wide receivers before going to the passing drills and the 1-on-1 drills with the quarterbacks. After the passing drills, we took a "Dean Dome" break (water break) for five minutes to get hydrated and cool down a little before the second half of practice. We closed practice with 7-on-7 and team drills.
Today's practice had a lot of energy. We put on the shells for the first time this season, so that's where a lot of that energy came from. You can tell some guys are still getting adjusted, but by this weekend we will be pretty well acclimated and have more momentum.
The freshmen are doing well. I know that whatever I can say to them on and off the field helps. I know a lot of them look up to me and whenever I can help prepare them mentally, I try to do that.
It's my last year at Indiana, and I want to be the most dangerous return man in the country. I want to have a better year than I had as a sophomore. As far as the team, we want to play 13.
Camp is going well, and I am thankful to be out here doing what I love."
