INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana women's soccer team got a goal from Christie Kotynski with just over ten minutes to play as the Hoosiers earned a 1-1 tie with Baylor on Friday, Sept. 1, at Lawrence Park.
IU got the equalizer in the 80th minute off a wild scramble in front of the net. Lauren Lamping took a free kick from 35 yards out and sent it into the box. The ball deflected off Taylor Fallon and a Baylor player and rolled into the goal to knot the game at one. Fallon and Lamping were awarded assists on the play. It was the second straight goal that Lamping has set up for the Hoosiers, as she assisted on Kristin Radcliffe's goal against Creighton on Sunday, Aug. 27.
The Hoosiers dominated the second half statistically, outshooting the Bears by a 12-1 margin. Ashley Holder made four saves in the half to keep Baylor alive in the contest. IU outshot the Bears 23-8 in the game.
Neither team was able to connect in overtime, though the Hoosiers had a solid opportunity in the first overtime on a corner by Lamping. The ball came into the box, but a header by Jessica Boots sailed high of the net. IU had a pair of opportunities late in the second overtime frame, but a shot by Carrie DeFreece sailed high just before the buzzer.
The Bears netted the game's first tally at 19:47 with Anna Schuch netting her first goal of the season. Baylor played a long ball in to Katie White up the right side, and the freshman raced to the ball, beating Hoosier keeper Stacey Van Boxmeer to it. White then crossed a ball to a streaking Schuch, who put it in the back of the net from 10 yards out.
The two players nearly connected for a goal in the opening minute, with White crossing another ball from the right side to Schuch. But the senior's shot went high over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
IU will face Texas Tech in the second game of the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. The game, to be held at Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium, will be free admission to the public.
