DeFreece Named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior co-captain Carrie DeFreece of the Indiana women's soccer team has been named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday, Sept. 11. DeFreece scored all three of the Hoosiers' goals in leading IU to a pair of victories and the Old National Bank Hoosier Classic title. DeFreece was named the tournament's Offensive MVP.
It is the first award from the conference in DeFreece's career, and the first weekly award for an Indiana player since Beverly Markwort was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19, 2005.
DeFreece started the weekend with the Hoosiers' only goal in a 1-0 victory over Northern Arizona. The senior dribbled past a Lumberjack defender into the right side of the box and lofted a shot across the goal mouth for her first goal of the season. The ball carried over NAU keeper Elizabeth Winkelblech's head and into the goal to give the Hoosiers all the offense they needed in the game.
The Olathe, Kan., native followed up with her first multi-goal game of her career against Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday, Sept. 10. DeFreece put Indiana on the board at the 13-minute mark of the contest. Jenna Babcock took the ball on the IU side of the field and fired a long, cross-field through pass to a streaking DeFreece, who tipped it low to the far side past keeper Erin Kane for the score.
DeFreece struck again just over 10 minutes later, this time on a set up from Lauren Lamping. The senior defender took a lofting shot from 40 yards out and the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and directly to the feet of DeFreece. The senior co-captain calmly flipped the ball past Kane for her second tally of the game and third of the weekend.
The Hoosiers (3-2-1) have won three straight contests and are undefeated in their last four. Indiana will travel to North Carolina this weekend for matches against Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 15, at 5 p.m. and UNC-Greensboro on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m.
