Sept. 11, 2006
On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending on Sept. 10, freshman quarterback Kellen Lewis is the winner. This is the first honor for Lewis and the second for the football team this season. Sophomore cornerback Chris Phillips won the award on Sept. 6.
Lewis made his collegiate debut in relief of Graeme McFarland after two offensive series and rallied the Hoosiers from a 17-0 deficit and a 23-7 halftime deficit to a 24-23 victory. Lewis finished the game with 12 carries for 88 yards and one touchdown and completed 15-of-28 passes for 228 yards and one touchdown. The 316 yards of total offense marked the second-best total offense debut by a Hoosier signal-caller - Antwaan Randle El accounted for 467 yards (385 passing and 82 rushing) and six touchdowns (three rushing and three passing) in a 45-30 victory over Western Michigan on Sept. 12, 1998. He became the 19th Hoosier to see his first collegiate action this season and led an IU squad featuring 49 freshmen (true and redshirt) to a victory in their first road action.
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they take on Southern Illinois in Bloomington at 4 p.m. EDT.
Lewis was one of many Hoosier athletes that turned in strong performances on the week, including Carrie DeFreece (women's soccer), Sara Diehl (volleyball), Jessica Gall (women's cross country), Brennan Plotner (men's cross country), Kevin Robson (men's soccer) and Lydia Schrott (field hockey).
Carrie DeFreece
F - Sr. - Olathe, Kan.
DeFreece was named Old National Bank Hoosier Classic Offensive MVP after scoring all three of the Hoosiers' goals this weekend, including two game-winners. DeFreece scored the only goal of IU's 1-0 victory over Northern Arizona in the 49th minute on a floating shot from the right side of the box. She followed that up by scoring both goals in Indiana's 2-0 victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with the game-winner at the 13:00 mark and her second tally of the contest at 23:07. Her performance against UWM was the first multi-goal game of her career and IU's first multi-goal performance since Kim Grodek scored two against Butler on Oct. 29, 2004.
Sara Diehl
DS - SR - Bloomington, Ind.
Diehl recorded 43 digs in the three matches that the Hoosiers played at the Dayton Invitational, helping the Hoosiers to a 3-2 win over Wake Forest in the opening match for both teams on Friday.
Jessica Gall
Sr. - West Lafayette, Ind. - West Lafayette
All-American Jessica Gall clocked a time of 17:40 at the Indiana Open 5K, taking second overall. Gall's time tied her career-best and was the sixth fastest time on the IU Course.
Brennon Plotner
RS Jr. - Fort Wayne, Ind. - Northrop
Brennon Plotner led the Hoosiers for a second week in a row when he ran a career-best 26:32, placing ninth overall at the Indiana Open 8K.
Kevin Robson
B - Sr. - St. Peter's, Mo.
Robson had assists on both of Indiana's goals this weekend and was named to the all-tournament team. He has been a key leader on offense, helping set up scoring opportunities.
Lydia Schrott
Forward - Sr. - Quarryville, Pa.
Senior forward Lydia Schrott led the Hoosiers to three road wins this week, helping IU set the longest road win streak in program history (5). Schrott registered points in all three games. Against Miami, Schrott scored the Hoosiers first goal of the game, before posting the only score against Ohio. The goal against the Bobcats was Schrott's third game-winning goal of the season. Against Radford, the Quarryville, Pa., native recorded her first two assists of the season, as she set up two of IU's five goals. Schrott is now nine points shy of becoming Indiana's first 100 point scorer in program history. Additionally, Schrott leads the Hoosiers in goals and points.
