Hoosiers Head to Carolina for Pair of Clashes

Setting the Scene
The Hoosiers take to the road for the final weekend before conference play starts, facing Charlotte and UNC Greensboro in North Carolina this weekend. Indiana enters the weekend having won its last three, all shutouts, and last weekend the Hoosiers came away as Old National Bank Hoosier Classic champions. Indiana defeated Northern Arizona 1-0 and Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2-0 to win the championship. Carrie DeFreece scored all three of IU's goals and was named Offensive MVP, while Stacey Van Boxmeer made seven saves in the two games and was named Defensive MVP.
The All-Time Series
This weekend will mark the first meeting for the Hoosiers and both Charlotte and UNC Greensboro. It will also be the first time that IU head coach Mick Lyon faces either the 49ers or the Spartans in his time as a head coach.
Scouting The Opponents
Charlotte enters the weekend with a 3-2-1 record after splitting a pair of matches at the Carolinas' Cup last weekend. The 49ers defeated South Carolina by a score of 1-0, but Clemson topped Charlotte 3-0 to end the 49ers' bid for the Cup. Charlotte is led by Hailey Beam and Kelsie Ormsby up front. Beam is tops on the team with three goals and six points, while Ormsby is close behind with two goals and five points. Charlotte has seen three different keepers so far this year, with Nicole Mercer (1.14 goals against average) starting four of the six games. Both Juli Black (three games, 0.98 GAA) and Lauren Brown (two games, 1.45 GAA) have also seen a fair share of time in goal.
The Spartans bring a 1-6-0 record into the weekend, and play Pennsylvania on Friday before facing the Hoosiers on Sunday. UNC Greensboro has not shied away from a difficult schedules, playing nationally ranked North Carolina, Tennessee and Wake Forest already in its non-conference slate. Three different players have scored goals for the Spartans this year and Katherine Ryan has posted a .744 save percentage on the season.

Hoosiers Win ONB Hoosier Classic
Indiana used a pair of shutout victories last weekend to come away champion of the Old National Bank Hoosier Classic. The Hoosiers shut out Northern Arizona (1-0) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2-0) to earn the Classic title. Carrie DeFreece scored all three of IU's goals on the weekend to earn Offensive MVP honors, while Stacey Van Boxmeer made seven saves in the two games and won Defensive MVP.
The Hoosier defense turned in a strong performance on the weekend, holding the two teams to a combined 13 shots, including a season-low three shots by NAU. Additionally, defenders Jenna Babcock and Lauren Lamping each set up a goal for DeFreece on Sunday. All four defenders - Babcock, Lamping, Jessica Boots and Kelly Lawrence - played every minute of both games and were named to the All-Tournament Team.
DeFreece Earns Big Ten Honor
Senior co-captain Carrie DeFreece of the Indiana women's soccer team has been named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday, Sept. 11. It is the first award from the conference in DeFreece's career, and the first weekly award for an Indiana player since Beverly Markwort was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19, 2005.
Drawing a Blank
Indiana's 3-0 shutout of UWM made it three shutouts in a row for the Hoosiers. It marked the seventh time in program history that Indiana has recorded three or more shutouts in a row and the first since Oct. 3-10, 2003, when IU shut out Iowa (1-0), Marshall (4-0) and Michigan (0-0). The Hoosiers have not allowed a goal since Anna Schuch scored in the 20th minute of IU's 1-1 tie with Baylor on Friday, Sept. 1, a span of 360:17, the third-longest in IU history.

Light the Lamp
Lauren Lamping's goal against Texas Tech was the first of the senior's career. Lamping also added an assist in the contest, making it three games in a row that she had registered an assist. Lamping has already set career highs in goals, assists (four) and points (six). She leads the team in assists this season, and has been a starter on the defense in all six contests, where the Hoosiers have allowed just four goals and 48 shots.
Two-stepping
DeFreece's two goals against Wisconsin-Milwaukee represented the first time in the senior's career that she has had more than one goal in a game. She became the first IU player to turn in a multi-goal performance since Kim Grodek scored two against Butler on Oct. 29, 2004. DeFreece now has six goals in her career to go along with five assists.
Regional Recognition
The three straight victories for the Hoosiers has given IU regional recognition in both the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) poll and the Soccerbuzz.com poll. IU is ranked ninth in the Great Lakes region by the NSCAA and 14th by Soccerbuzz.com.
Shooting Them Down
After Sunday's 2-0 victory, in which IU registered 14 shots to Wisconsin-Milwaukee's 10, the Hoosiers have now outshot all six of their opponents this season. On Friday, Indiana outshot NAU by a 24-3 margin. The three shots were the fewest the Hoosiers had allowed in a game since Oakland registered just one on Sept. 30, 2004.
This season, Indiana has registered a staggering 118 shots, led by freshman Kristin Arnold's 14. Likewise, the IU defense has been strong, limiting opponents to just 48 shots on the season, an average of just eight shots per game against.
The Hoosiers have outshot their opponents in six straight games for the first time in school history, eclipsing the previous mark of five straight games, set from Sept. 4-18, 2005.
Climbing the Ladder
Junior Kristin Radcliffe's goal on Sept. 2 against Texas Tech was her ninth career tally, as she nears the top 10 in that category. She is just two behind Shelly Gruszka and Quincy Wolkowitz, who are tied for ninth. Radcliffe is tied for eighth all-time in game-winning goals (four) and needs just two more to vault into the top five.
Several other Hoosiers are approaching milestones, including senior forward Megan Pipkens. Pipkens is tied for seventh on the Hoosiers' list in career assists (11) and is eighth in career shots (111). The Holt, Mich., native is tied with Kelly Kram for seventh and is one behind Kris Fosdick on the all-time list.
Junior Stacey Van Boxmeer's 89 career saves are the fifth-most all time and her nine career wins are tied for fifth in IU history with Monica Cox. Van Boxmeer needs six wins and 44 saves to move past Lauren Fabbro into fourth on both lists.
Scoring Surge
The Hoosiers' four goals on Sept. 2 against Texas Tech were the most for IU since Oct. 29, 2004, when IU defeated Butler 4-0 on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. It was also the first time since Sept. 10, 2004, that the Hoosiers had seen four different players score goals in a regular-season contest. In that game, a 5-1 victory over Florida International, then-sophomores Carrie DeFreece and Megan Pipkens each tallied a goal and an assist and then-freshman Kristin Radcliffe scored a goal. DeFreece and Pipkens each tallied assists and Radcliffe scored a goal against Texas Tech. All six Hoosiers that scored points in the game were upperclassmen.
Extra Time
IU's overtime affair with Baylor on Sept. 1 was the second straight overtime game for the Hoosiers that ended in a 1-1 tie. Indiana tied No. 24 Purdue in its regular season finale in 2005 by that score. IU is now 4-3-1 against the Big 12 in its history, with five of the seven games coming against Missouri.
First Goal Wins
In each of the Hoosiers' last three contests, Indiana has scored the first goal in the game. IU is 3-0-0 when it has scored first this year, but 0-2-1 when its opponents score first. In 2005, Indiana recorded a 7-1-0 record when scoring first.
Everybody Plays
Indiana head coach Mick Lyon can't say that he hasn't had a look at any of his players this season, as all 26 players saw action in Saturday's 4-0 win over Texas Tech. Thirteen different players recorded shots in the contest and eight recorded shots on goal.
Starting Quickly
In the Hoosiers' season-opener against California, three of IU's nine freshmen - Jessica Boots, Christie Kotynski and Taylor Fallon - were in the starting lineup, while Kristin Arnold and Liz Holby also saw playing time in the contest. Boots, Kotynski and Fallon also started against Creighton, and were joined in the starting lineup by Arnold and fellow freshman Kelly Lawrence, meaning that five of IU's 11 starters were freshmen in that contest. Holby entered as a substitute in the Creighton game as well. Kotynski and Boots have now stared all six of the Hoosiers' contests this season, while Lawrence and Arnold have started five apiece.
