BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University men's golf team will head back out on the road for its second tournament of the season at the Gopher Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 16-17. The University of Minnesota will host the tournament at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minn.
The event consists of three rounds, with 36 holes played on Saturday and the final 18 holes taking place on Sunday. Along with Indiana and Minnesota, 10 other teams will comprise the field. Big Ten rivals Ohio State, Northwestern, and Michigan State join the Hoosiers and the Gophers in the tournament, which will be rounded out by Stanford, Lamar, Georgia Southern, Finland, SMU, Denver and Notre Dame.
Tournament play begins Saturday with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. (EST) with the second round following the conclusion of play. On Sunday, the final round will commence at 9:00 a.m.
In 2000, tournament site Spring Hill Golf Club was rated the fifth-best new private course in the country by Golf Digest. For the tournament, the golf course will play at a par of 72 and will measure 7,020 yards.
Last season, the inaugural season of the event, the Hoosiers finished in sixth place with a 54-hole total of 902 (301-304-297). Leading the way for Indiana was Jorge Campillo, who finished in a tie for 14th after carding a 221 (73-75-73). Host Minnesota captured both the team and individual titles at the inagural championship, as the Gophers defeated Washington in a tiebreaker to take home the tournament championship. Minnesota had a score of 883 (301-284-298) for the tournament while Niall Turner turned in the only under-par performance of the weekend to capture medalist honors. Turner carded a 1-under 215 (73-70-72) for the title.
