CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Christie Kotynski scored a goal with 2:46 remaining in regulation for the Indiana women's soccer team to give the Hoosiers a 1-1 tie with Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 16. Both the Hoosiers and 49ers moved to 3-2-2 on the season.
"It was disappointing to outplay them and create tons of chances and not win, but it was really a learning experience for us," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We came out with a lackluster effort in the first half, and partly because of that we gave up a late goal, but in the second half we responded, played quicker and created some incredible chances. I think we became a better soccer team after playing this game."
The Hoosiers tied the score at 87:14 on a header by Kotynski. Off a free kick by Kelly Lawrence from 35 yards out, a leaping Kotynski snuck the ball just inside the far post to knot the game at one. It was the second goal of the season for the freshman, while Lawrence earned her first collegiate point on the assist.
The Hoosiers and 49ers battled back-and-forth in the first half, with each team displaying a solid defensive effort. In the final minute of the half, though, Charlotte was awarded a corner and cashed in on it to take a 1-0 lead with 20 seconds to play. The corner kick bounced off a pair of players and Rachel Mees kicked a shot that was stopped on the goal line, but the junior got her own rebound and slipped it home for the 49ers.
That goal snapped an IU shutout streak that lasted for nearly five games. The Hoosiers had not allowed a goal since Sept. 1 against Baylor. The streak, which spanned 404:57, was the second-longest in IU women's soccer history.
IU outshot the 49ers 18-8 in the contest, including a 10-0 advantage in the second half. Juli Black made six saves for Charlotte, while Stacey Van Boxmeer made three for IU.
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 17, when they face UNC Greensboro at 1 p.m.
