St. Louis, Mo. - Despite a solid effort, the ninth-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Saint Louis on Friday evening.
"We've still got a ways to go with this team," said head coach Mike Freitag. "I thought we played better in the second half, we really got after the ball. One thing about this team is that they keep fighting. We'll regroup, and learn from this loss. It's not always bad to lose, as long as we learn from it."
In the first half, Saint Louis (3-2-1) came out firing on offense. Although each team tallied four shots in the first half, the Billikens controlled the ball in their offensive half for most of the half.
Indiana (3-3-1) had two solid chances to score in the first half. In the 19th minute, Brian Ackley sent a long pass to Darren Yeagle, who sprinted towards the goal followed closely by three Billiken backs. His shot went just wide of its mark.
In the 27th minute, Kevin Robson took a cross from Yeagle, and his shot also went just wide.
The Billikens scored the only goal of the game in the 36th minute, as Kyle Patterson ran down the sideline and passed the ball to Alex Matteson, who shot a cross from four yards out.
In the second half, Indiana outshot Saint Louis 7-3, but was unable to capitalize. The best opportunity came in the 85th minute, when the Hoosiers earned a corner kick. John Michael Haden sent the kick in to Eric Alexander, who headed it to Greg Stevning. His header was wide left of the net.
The Hoosiers also made several last-minute attempts to score in the final minutes, with crosses that were deflected by the Billiken defense.
Indiana outshot Saint Louis 11-7 in the game, with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Hoosier goalie Chay Cain made three saves in goal, while his Billiken counterpart Ross Kaufman had two saves. Saint Louis also had a team save.
The Hoosiers remain on the road on Wednesday, Sept. 20, as they travel to Akron, Ohio to take on the Zips at 7:30 p.m
