Hoosiers Place Sixth At Gopher Invitational

WAYZATA, Minn. - The Indiana University men's golf team finished in sixth place at the Gopher Invitational, held at Spring Hill Golf Club. The Hoosiers wrapped up the 54-hole tournament with a total of 908 (300-295-313).
Stanford captured the team title at the event, carding a 889 (301-291-297) to hold off host Minnesota, who placed second at 894 (303-287-304). Individually, Colt Knost of SMU (71-67-76) and Zack Miller of Stanford (71-71-72) shared medalist honors with a total of 214.
Leading the way for the Hoosiers was sophomore Jorge Campillo, who tied for fifth with a tournament total of 220 (72-73-75). It was his second top-five finish of the season and the fifth of his career.
Junior Santiago Quirarte shared 28th position with a 230 (77-78-75) and sophomore Drew Allenspach tied for 32nd after carding a total of 231 (73-76-82).
Fellow sophomore Seth Brandon finished the tournament in a tie for 43rd after a 236 (78-73-85) and classmate Brandon Pike shared 48th position with a 238 (84-73-81).
"Overall, this was better than our first tournament," head coach Mike Mayer said. "We improved this week, and we found more things to improve on. We beat some very good teams in a high quality field and will take this into the next tournament. We were disappointed in today's round, but not disappointed in the tournament."
The Hoosiers will hit the links next on Sept. 25 when they travel to Richmond, Va., for the VCU/Mattaponi Spring Shootout. This will be the first time that IU will compete in the tournament, which will conclude on Sept. 26.
