Hoosiers Continue Road Schedule at Akron

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Hoosiers take on No. 21 Akron this week in Akron, Ohio.
Hoosier News and Notes
• Indiana dropped its third game of the season against Saint Louis, 1-0 on Friday, Sept. 15.
• After being ranked at No. 9 last week, the Hoosiers dropped out of the NSCAA coaches poll. Indiana is ranked 20th by Soccer America.
• Indiana played on television for the first time this year at Saint Louis, with the match televised on CSTV.
• Indiana is in the middle of a four-game road slate. The team returns home on Sunday, Sept. 24 to start Big Ten action against Michigan at 2:30 p.m.
• Hoosier backs Julian Dieterle, Greg Stevning and Charley Traylor are holding opponents to eight shots per game, allowing 1.33 goals per game.
Scouting Akron
• After falling in its first game of the season to No. 21 UC Santa Barbara, Akron has won its last six games, most recently a 3-0 win over IPFW on Sept. 17. It moved into the NSCAA rankings this week at No. 21.
• Akron has shut out its last three opponents. The team has not allowed a goal in its last 295:23 of play.
• Sinisa Ubiparipovic leads the team in scoring with five goals and five assists on the year. Two of his goals and one assist came against IPFW. Pablo Moreira has three goals and an assist, while Ashley Kozickia has scored twice with an assist.
• On defense, Ossie Michalsen, Jonathan McClain and Andrew Tipton are holding teams to an average of 6.1 shots per game and 1.09 goals allowed per game. Evan Bush has started all seven games in goal, and has made 10 saves.
• All-time, Indiana has a 23-3-1 record against Akron. Last year, the Hoosiers upset the top-ranked Zips 1-0 in overtime.
IU Coaching Ties
• Akron has two coaches on its staff who are familiar with Indiana. Head coach Caleb Porter played at Indiana from 1993-97, and served as an assistant coach from 2000-05. Assistant coach Dave Giffard was a volunteer assistant with the Hoosiers last season.
• Porter is the third head coach that Indiana will face this year who both played and coached at IU. The Hoosiers also faced John Trask of UIC and Mike Getman of UAB earlier this year.
Coach's Corner
Head coach Mike Freitag previews this week's game against Akron, where he will face former IU assistant Caleb Porter.
It will be funny playing against Caleb. It's going to bring back camp memories, and playing against each other with camp teams. Caleb inherits a quality team that has had a good start to the season. It'll be a challenging environment. I'm sure Akron will have a good crowd, and it will be another good test for us.
I expect the team to step up and really come together for this game against Akron. We're all frustrated that we have not been able to get the results we were hoping for in some of our recent games. So far this year, there hasn't been a game that I didn't feel that we could win. We just have to keep playing, and find a way to get those results. We might try a change here or there in personnel or position. We're sorting through different options one practice at a time.
Hoosiers on Television
• Indiana is scheduled to have two regular season games air on television, beginning with Saint Louis, which aired on CSTV.
• The Hoosiers are also scheduled to play Penn State on Fox Soccer Channel on Oct. 20.
• In the past nine years, Indiana is 14-6-2 on television.
Outshooting Opponents
• The Hoosiers are averaging 16.1 shots per game, while their opponents are averaging just 8.0 shots per game.
• On three occasions this year, Indiana has held its opponents to six shots or less. The team outshot No. 8 Creighton 22-6, UAB 19-5 and No. 2 Connecticut 17-3.
• No. 2 Connecticut was held without a shot until the 74th minute of the game.
The Corner Café
• Indiana holds a 52-21 advantage in corner kicks against opponents this season.
• The Hoosiers have totaled two goals this year directly off a corner kick.
Youth Reigns
• Freshman Darren Yeagle leads the team with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist). His last goal game when he scored the golden goal against Tulsa to give the Hoosiers a 2-1 win.
• Sophomore Brian Ackley has three goals on the year. His last tally came with the equalizer against Tulsa in the 85th minute.
Can I Help You?
• Seniors John Michael Hayden and Kevin Robson each have three assists on the season.
• Hayden had assists against No. 8 Creighton, UAB and No. 15 Notre Dame.
• Robson had two assists against Tulsa, as well as an assist against No. 2 Connecticut.
Freshman Phenoms
• Two freshmen have earned starting spots for the Hoosiers in 2006. Darren Yeagle and Kevin Alston have started in all seven games for Indiana.
• Yeagle scored his first career goal against No. 2 Connecticut. He currently leads the team with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist). Alston is a key member of the defense.
• Other freshmen who have seen playing time are Eric Alexander, Lee Hagedorn and Ofori Sarkodie.
Recapping the Saint Louis Game
• The Hoosiers lost their second 1-0 game of the season against Saint Louis on Friday, Sept. 15.
• The Billikens scored the only goal of the game in the 36th minute, as Kyle Patterson ran down the sideline and passed the ball to Alex Matteson, who shot into the right corner from four yards out.
• In the second half, Indiana outshot Saint Louis 7-3, but was unable to capitalize. The best opportunity came in the 85th minute, when the Hoosiers earned a corner kick. John Michael Haden sent the kick in to Eric Alexander, who headed it to Greg Stevning. Stevning's header was wide left of the net. Solid chances from Darren Yeagle and Kevin Robson in the first half also went just wide of their mark.
• The Hoosiers also made several last-ditch attempts to score in the final minutes, with crosses that were deflected by the Billiken defense.
Hoosiers Take On Ranked Teams
• The Hoosiers regularly play one of the toughest schedules in the nation. In its first seven games this season, Indiana has played four ranked opponents, plus a ranked opponent in the preseason.
• Indiana has taken on No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. The Hoosiers defeated No. 1 Maryland 1-0 in exhibition action, tied No. 2 Connecticut 1-1, and fell to No. 3 Southern Methodist 1-0.
• Illinois-Chicago was not ranked in the preseason, but the team has moved into the top-25 with its play to start the year. Indiana defeated UIC 1-0 in exhibition play.
• Saint Louis, although not ranked the week they played the Hoosiers, was ranked 20th the next week.
• UAB has also moved into the top-25. Indiana defeated UAB 2-1 in its second game of the season.
