MUNCIE, Ind. - The tenth-ranked Indiana field hockey team improved to 2-1 on the young season with a 2-1 win over in-state foe Ball State on Sept. 2 at BSU Turf Field. The Hoosiers were led by goals from senior All-American forward Lydia Schrott and junior forward Kate O'Connell.
Defense characterized the first half, with both teams unable to score for the first 35 minutes of play. The Hoosiers out-shot the Cardinals 9-6 in the first period and forced five penalty corners.
O'Connell put the first points of the game on the board when she converted the feed from junior midfielder Amanda Oyler into the 1-0 advantage in the 43rd minute. The goal was O'Connell's first of the 2006 season.
The Cardinals tied the score in the 50th minute when BSU's Jamie Kahn found Katie Kloeckener in front of the cage for the score.
In the 57th minute, Schrott gave Indiana the win as she notched her fifth goal of the season. The Quarryville, Pa., native converted her first rebounded shot into a goal.
For the game, Indiana out-shot Ball State, 14-13 and took five corners. Junior goalkeeper Haley Exner registered nine saves for the contest.
