Hoosiers Set for Big Ten Opener

Setting the Scene
Indiana opens its Big Ten slate this weekend as conference opponents Minnesota and Ohio State visit Bloomington. The Hoosiers enter the weekend on a six-game unbeaten streak, the longest the Hoosiers have enjoyed since 1993-94. Indiana has not lost since the opening weekend of the 2006 season, when Creighton topped the Hoosiers 2-1 on Sunday, Aug. 27.
The All-Time Series
The Hoosiers have faced Minnesota 16 times in the history of the two schools, with the Golden Gophers holding a 9-5-2 edge in the all-time series. The Gophers won a dramatic, overtime contest against the Hoosiers last year in St. Paul, as Kaitlyn Neary scored in the first overtime to give Minnesota a 2-1 victory. Head Coach Mick Lyon has a 3-4-0 record against Minnesota as a head coach, including a 2-2-0 record with IU.
Last Time Out
Christie Kotynski scored a goal with 2:46 remaining in regulation on Friday, Sept. 15, to give the Hoosiers a 1-1 tie with Charlotte. Off a free kick by Kelly Lawrence from 35 yards out, a leaping Kotynski snuck the ball just inside the far post to knot the game at one.
The 49ers' goal snapped an IU shutout streak that lasted for nearly five games. The Hoosiers had not allowed a goal since Sept. 1 against Baylor. The streak, which spanned 404:57, was the second-longest in IU women's soccer history.
Against UNC Greensboro, Liz Holby scored her first career goal and Stacey Van Boxmeer made five saves as Indiana earned a 1-1 tie on Sunday, Sept. 17. The tie upped the Hoosiers' unbeaten streak to six games.
The Spartans got a second-half goal from Karla Davis to earn the tie. Katherine Ryan made five saves in the victory. The Hoosiers outshot UNCG 17-11 in the game and earned 10 corners to Greensboro's two.

Scouting the Opponents
Minnesota enters the opening weekend of the Big Ten season with the best overall record in the conference at 6-1-1. UM came away victorious in the Gopher Invitational last weekend after victories over Dartmouth (1-0) and Northern Colorado (3-1). This weekend will be the second away from home for the Gophers, who earned a win and a tie at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I., Sept. 8-10. Lindsey Schwartz and Elena Fruci have four goals apiece to lead the Gopher offense, while Chelsey Turner and Lindsey Dare have combined for a 0.49 goals against average and a .941 save percentage on the season.
Keeping `em Blank
When Charlotte scored with just 20 seconds to play in the first half of the Hoosiers' 1-1 tie with Charlotte, it stopped the second-longest shutout streak in IU history. Heading into the game, the Hoosiers had run off three straight shutouts, the seventh time in program history that Indiana has recorded three or more shutouts in a row and the first since Oct. 3-10, 2003, when IU shut out Iowa (1-0), Marshall (4-0) and Michigan (0-0).

Using Her Head
Christie Kotynski's goal in the 88th minute on a header off a Kelly Lawrence free kick was her second game-tying goal of the season in the closing minutes of regulation. Kotynski also scored the Hoosiers' game-tying goal against Butler on Sept. 1, with that goal coming with 10:04 to play. Kotynski leads IU freshmen with two goals, while Liz Holby (one goal), Taylor Fallon (one assist) and Lawrence (one assist) all have posted their first career points this season.
Climbing the Ladder
Several other Hoosiers are approaching milestones, including senior forward Megan Pipkens. Pipkens is tied for sixth on the Hoosiers' list in career assists (12) and is eighth in career shots (116). The Holt, Mich., native is tied with Kris Fosdick for sixth and is one behind Carrie Watts on the all-time assists list. The senior is just two assists behind Tracy Grose and Emily Hotz, who are tied for third in IU history.
Junior Stacey Van Boxmeer's 97 career saves are the fifth-most all-time and her nine career wins are tied for fifth in IU history with Monica Cox. Van Boxmeer needs six wins and 36 saves to move past Lauren Fabbro into fourth on both lists. Her 1.23 career goals against average is fifth all-time for the Hoosiers.
Junior Kristin Radcliffe has scored two goals this season for the Hoosiers, and is nearing the career top 10 in that category. With nine career goals, she is just two behind Shelly Gruszka and Quincy Wolkowitz, who are tied for ninth. Radcliffe is tied for eighth all-time in game-winning goals (four) and needs just two more to vault into the top five.
DeFreece Earns Big Ten Honor
Senior co-captain Carrie DeFreece of the Indiana women's soccer team was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday, Sept. 11. It is the first award from the conference in DeFreece's career, and the first weekly award for an IU player since Beverly Markwort was named Big Ten Defensive POW on Sept. 19, 2005.
Light the Lamp
Lauren Lamping's goal against Texas Tech was the first of the senior's career. Lamping also added an assist in the contest, making it three games in a row that she had registered an assist. Lamping has already set career highs in goals, assists (four) and points (six). She leads the team in assists this season, and has been a starter on the defense in all eight contests.
Shot Down
The Hoosiers have now outshot all eight of their opponents this year, totalling 153 shots, 19.12 per game, which is second-most in the Big Ten behind Purdue's 210. IU has allowed just 67 shots on the season, which is second-lowest in the conference to Northwestern's 64. Indiana has taken 86 more shots than its opponents, an average of 10.75 per game, which is the largest differential in the conference.
Two-Stepping
DeFreece's two goals against Wisconsin-Milwaukee represented the first time in the senior's career that she has had more than one goal in a game. She became the first IU player to turn in a multi-goal performance since Kim Grodek scored two against Butler on Oct. 29, 2004. DeFreece now has six goals in her career to go along with five assists. Junior Lindsay McCarthy is the only other current Hoosier with a multi-goal game in her career.
First Goal Wins
Indiana has scored the first goal of the contest in four of its eight contests this season. IU is 3-0-1 when it has scored first this year, but 0-2-2 when its opponents score first. In 2005, Indiana recorded a 7-1-0 record when scoring first.
Consistently Defensive
Defense has been a strong point for the Hoosiers this season, as they have allowed 67 shots (second in the Big Ten) and six goals (tied, third in the Big Ten) this season. Part of that strength has come from Indiana's consistency on the back line, as IU has started the same back four in each of the last seven games.
Those four - Kelly Lawrence, Jessica Boots, Lauren Lamping and Jenna Babcock - have played nearly every minute for the Hoosiers recently, as Lamping has been on the field for the entirety of each of the last four games and Boots has played all but 12 minutes of the last four. Of a possible 780 minutes, Boots has played 739, Lamping has played 730 and Babcock has played 681. Additionally, Stacey Van Boxmeer has played all but 17 minutes in net for the Hoosiers.
Home Sweet Home
The Hoosiers have played three games this season on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium, and so far the results have been very strong for IU. Indiana has won all three contests, scoring seven goals, and has not allowed a goal on the field this season. In 2005, the Hoosiers were 5-3-1 at Armstrong Stadium and outscored their opponents 15-10 at the venue.
Big Ten Openers
The Hoosiers have gone 3-6-3 in their first Big Ten match of the season throughout their history, but their Big Ten debuts at home have been quite impressive, as IU is 7-3-2 in its first Big Ten contests at home. The Hoosiers have not lost their first Big Ten match of the season at Armstrong Stadium since Sept. 15, 2000, when Northwestern topped IU 1-0.
Freshman Resurfacing
Both of IU's goals last weekend were scored by freshmen - Liz Holby and Christie Kotynski - and fellow freshman Kelly Lawrence added an assist on the weekend. Freshmen have scored three goals and two assists this season, but no freshmen have scored a point since Kotynski's goal against Baylor on Sept. 1.
Starting to Look Familiar
Since the Baylor game on Sept. 1, IU head coach Mick Lyon has used the same starters in every game, and that lineup has gone 3-0-3 over the six-game string. The lineup includes three seniors, four juniors and four freshmen.
Hoosiers Win ONB Hoosier Classic
Indiana used a pair of shutout victories to come away champion of the Old National Bank Hoosier Classic Sept. 8-10. The Hoosiers shut out Northern Arizona (1-0) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2-0) to earn the Classic title. Carrie DeFreece scored all three of IU's goals on the weekend to earn Offensive MVP honors, while Stacey Van Boxmeer made seven saves in the two games and won Defensive MVP.
The Hoosier defense turned in a strong performance on the weekend, holding the two teams to a combined 13 shots, including a season-low three shots by NAU. Additionally, defenders Jenna Babcock and Lauren Lamping both set up goals for DeFreece on Sunday. All four defenders - Babcock, Lamping, Jessica Boots and Kelly Lawrence - played every minute of both games and were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Scoring Surge
The Hoosiers' four goals on Sept. 2 against Texas Tech were the most for IU since Oct. 29, 2004, when IU defeated Butler 4-0 on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. It was also the first time since Sept. 10, 2004, that the Hoosiers had seen four different players score goals in a regular-season contest. DeFreece and Pipkens each tallied assists and Radcliffe scored a goal against Texas Tech. All six Hoosiers that scored in the game were upperclassmen.
Everybody Plays
Indiana head coach Mick Lyon can't say that he hasn't had a look at any of his players this season, as all 26 players saw action in Saturday's 4-0 win over Texas Tech. Thirteen different players recorded shots in the contest and eight recorded shots on goal.
Offensive Outburst
The Hoosiers posted 27 shots against Creighton on Sunday, Aug. 27, matching the 2005 season high, which was set in IU's 2-0 win over Bowling Green on Sept. 18, 2005. IU also registered 10 corner kicks in the Creighton game, which was the most for a Hoosier team since IU put up 11 against DePaul on Oct. 24, 2004.
Aye, Aye Captain
The Hoosiers have named their captains for the 2006 season with two juniors and a senior filling the leadership roles. Senior midfielder Carrie DeFreece, junior midfielder Lindsay McCarthy and junior defender Shannon Vnoucek were chosen by their peers as the team's captains.
