On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending on Sept. 17, sophomore Erica Short is the award winner. This is the first honor for Short.
Short earned Most Valuable Player honors of the IU Credit Union Invitational on Sept. 16 and 17. It was the fourth time this season that she earned honors following a tournament that the Hoosiers participated in, as she was named to the All-Tournament Team at the West Virginia Invitational, the TIS Bookstore Invitational and the Marriott Flyer Invitational. On the weekend, Short accumulated 55 kills in 10 games played and added six total b locks and 26 digs. Against Mercer on Saturday afternoon, Short recorded a career-high for a four-game match with 25 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Her 17 digs in the match was also a career-best.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, Sept. 22 when they open Big Ten play at No. 19 Michigan. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
Lewis was one of many Hoosier athletes that turned in strong performances on the week, including Jessica Gall (women's cross country), Josh Tudela (men's soccer), Morgan Miller (field hockey) and Christie Kotynski (women's soccer).
Jessica Gall
Sr. - West Lafayette, Ind. - West Lafayette
All-American Jessica Gall won her first meet of the season in a career-best 17:36.3 to help lead the Hoosiers to their fourth-consecutive Indiana Intercollegiates 5K title. Indiana's team score of 38 points was its lowest among the four-straight meet titles.
Josh Tudela
MF - Sr. - Evansville, Ind. - North
Tudela, a team captain, led the Hoosiers in a 1-0 loss at Saint Louis. He had two shots in the game, including one on goal. In the second half, Indiana outshot Saint Louis 7-3. Defensively, he helped hold the Saint Louis attack to just seven shots in the game.
Morgan Miller
B - Sr. - Gap, Pa. - Pequea Valley
Miller helped the Hoosiers to two victories on the weekend, including a 2-1 overtime win against Central Michigan and a 3-0 win over Maine. She led the Hoosiers with one assist (vs. CMU), one goal and a defensive save against Maine. Miller and the Hoosier defense recorded its third shutout of the season against the Black Bears and only allowed a combined 12 shots against the weekend's opponents.
Christie Kotynski
M - FR - Hudson, Ohio - Hudson
Kotynski scored the game-tying goal for the Hoosiers off a Kelly Lawrence free kick with just 2:46 to play against Charlotte, helping the Hoosiers extend their unbeaten streak to six games with a pair of ties this weekend. Kotynski has two goals this season, both in the closing minutes of 1-1 ties.
