BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head coach Terry Hoeppner spoke to the IU trustees regarding the facility enhancement plan on Sept. 20. Below is a transcript of his comments:
"I had the opportunity to sit through some of the preliminary stages of planning for the new end zone facility. From a football coach's standpoint, what it does for us is combines everything that we need. Sometimes, perception becomes reality. This facility will be in form and function one of the finest facilities, not just in the Big Ten, but in the country because of the use of current space combined with the plans presented today.
I spent some time with the coaching staff today, and we truly feel that this facility would be so beneficial to us in so many ways. One of our program goals is to develop student-athletes into champions on the field, in the classroom and in life. This facility will give us everything we need to accomplish this. From a football coaching staff perspective this is a quantum leap for our program.
With the current leadership that we have, as evident by the people in this room and their vision, I think this building is the catalyst we need to make the next step that everyone wants. In total, the building will service us academically. It will be the center of the IU student-athletes universe. The coaches at Indiana have great chemistry right now. I really think it's the perfect time to take advantage of that chemistry.
As the football coach, I endorse this plan and think it's exactly what we need. Every time I talk about it or look at the plans, it takes my breath away.
From time to time, I have been asked if football can succeed at a basketball school. You better believe it can and it will. All sports will benefit from this facility. I appreciate your indulgence in hearing my two cents. I am passionate about this, and I will do everything I can to keep recruiting them everyday. I'm not just talking about the student-athletes, but the students and the alumni. That Club Level will be a great gathering place for our alumni. I see it being a great gathering spot that we will all take advantage of. Thank you for your time."
On his involvement in the planning:
"I really appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the planning. The
functionality of this facility will attract people itself. There are some
really beautiful facilities around the country that are so non-functional,
but this one has beauty and functionality. This is big time. "
