Sept. 22, 2006
Before heading off to Richmond, Va., for the VCU/Mattaponi Spring Shootout, Indiana men's golf head coach Mike Mayer took time to speak with IUHOOSIERS.com about the tournament. Virginia Commonwealth will host the event at Mattaponi Springs Golf Course on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 25-26.
On the team heading into the event:
"This has been a very good week of practice and I have seen a lot of improvement from the team. We saw a better effort in our last tournament and hope to see continued positive strides this time out. It is yet another outstanding field and we will have to be on the top of our game to be competitive."
On sophomore Jorge Campillo:
"Jorge has had two very good tournaments in-a-row but I'm still looking for bigger and better things from him. His game continues to improve and if he can reduce his mistakes he will contend for the individual title."
On sophomore Seth Brandon:
"Seth did not have the best outing last tournament and I look for him to bounce back in a big way. He has been playing very anxious and we need to help him settle down and play his game."
On sophomore Drew Allenspach:
"Drew had two very solid rounds for us to open the Gopher Invitational but struggled in the final 18. He's close and needs to click on all cylinders for us at Mattaponi."
On junior Santiago Quirarte:
"Santiago had a very good effort last week and showed some heart. He needs to continue to play with passion and determination - that is his strength."
On freshman Alex Martin making his collegiate debut:
"We get to see what Alex Martin can bring to our team. Alex has had a tremendous junior career and could really help this program. It's been difficult for him to crack the top five but he has been working very hard and has earned his spot for this tournament."
