BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior defender Lauren Lamping scored the lone goal of the contest as the Indiana women's soccer team outlasted a 1:55 rain delay for a 1-0 victory over Minnesota on Friday, Sept. 22, at Armstrong Stadium. IU improved to 4-2-3 (1-0-0 Big Ten) with the victory, while Minnesota moved to 6-2-1 (0-1-0 Big Ten).
The Hoosiers got the game's only goal at 58:14 after a Gopher foul gave the Hoosiers a free kick just outside of the box. Senior Ali Brown took the kick and passed it to an open Lamping near the center of the field. The senior lofted a shot toward the upper right corner and it carried over Minnesota keeper Lindsey Dare for the senior's second goal of the season.
Just 3:19 into the contest, a bolt of lightning sent both teams and fans looking for shelter. The delay lasted for 1:55, and play did not resume until just after 9 p.m. EDT.
Dare had a stellar game in net for the Golden Gophers, making 10 saves in the contest. Perhaps her best effort came midway through the second half, freshman Kristin Arnold unleashed a shot that deflected off a Minnesota defender and toward the lower left corner. Dare changed her direction on the play and made a diving save to keep the Hoosier lead at one.
Indiana registered 16 shots to Minnesota's 8 in the contest. Stacey Van Boxmeer made two saves for the Hoosiers to pick up the victory. Indiana had three corners in the game to UM's one.
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 24, when they host Ohio State (4-3-1, 0-1-0 Big Ten) at noon before the men's soccer team hosts Michigan at 2:30 p.m. The Buckeyes were defeated in their Big Ten opener, falling 1-0 at Purdue on Friday afternoon.
