Throughout the week, IUHOOSIERS.com will take a look at what life is like for the new members of the women's golf team in their first week on campus. Freshman Laura Nochta, a native of Cortland, Ohio, shared her experiences from Saturday and Sunday.
My first week on college has been an exciting, yet stressful one! I was ready for the weekend to start so I wouldn't have to worry about my schoolwork and classes for a day or two. We also had a special visitor (an '07 recruit) come this weekend and I was lucky enough to have the honor of being her host for 48 hours! Saturday morning was the second round of qualifying, and we played at Eagle Pointe. Unfortunately, I didn't play as well as I hoped, but I wasn't too discouraged because I knew there was one more day to play! After our round we went to Coach Wallman's house for a cook out and goal signing. Another special bonding moment for the team! Afterwards, Kellye, Anita, my recruit, and I went to the football game against Western Michigan. It was a lot of fun. I had not been to a big college football game in years, so it was nice to see all the excitment and actually be part of it! Then my recruit and I came back to the dorms and hung out for awhile, but we had to get to sleep early because I had another qualifying round the next morning.
We met at the IU course at 6:30 in the morning in order to drive to Otter Creek, another course we play on for qualifying. I really like this course because it's challenging and fits my game well. We finished our round and I'm happy to say I played well and shot 74! I made the traveling team for the first two tournaments (Wisconsin and Michigan State). I'm excited and proud that after a bad round on Saturday, I came back strong and confident for the third and final round. On our way home from Otter Creek the team stopped at Subway for a little lunch. Sunday night just caught up with my school work and called some of my friends and family back at home. Another easy night because we have our first workout session Monday morning at 6:30! I can't wait!
Overall, I'm having a great time! I get homesick at times, but I know in a few weeks I won't want to go home! College is hard work and classes/homework take up a lot of time and energy. My classes are hard, but mostly because I have more homework than I did in high school. I'm trying to find a balance that works well for me. I know my way around campus pretty well and had no trouble finding my classes. I love the feeling when I walk to class, seeing hundreds of students walking around just like me. The only problem with being a freshman is that you stick out like a sore thumb! I look and act like a freshman! Kellye, Anita and I have discovered that theres no way to hide it! I like living in the dorms so far and get along with my roommate. I'm looking forward to the next few weeks, with traveling and school.
