Setting the Scene
The Hoosiers welcome Rhode Island, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Northern Arizona to Bloomington this weekend for the newly-named Old National Bank Hoosier Classic. URI and Milwaukee will kick off the tournament on Friday at 5 p.m., while the Hoosiers will face NAU in the nightcap. The Lumberjacks and Rams will open Sunday's action at 11 a.m. and Indiana and the Panthers will face off at 1:30 p.m. to finish off the weekend.
Indiana enters the classic with a 1-2-1 record after going undefeated (1-0-1) in the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge a week ago. IU tied Baylor 1-1 in Indianapolis and then won its Armstrong Stadium opener 4-0 over Texas Tech. Senior defender Lauren Lamping scored a goal and posted two assists on the weekend and now leads the team with three assists and five points on the year.
The All-Time Series
Indiana meets Northern Arizona for the first time in the history of the two programs today. Head coach Mick Lyon has never faced NAU as a head coach and Lumberjack coach Andre Luciano, a former Hoosier keeper, has never faced his alma mater as a head coach.
Scouting The Lumberjacks
NAU came away as champions of the Hilton Garden Inn Mountain Classic, a tournament that it played host to last weekend. NAU topped Ball State, 2-1, and Toledo, 2-1, to emerge as the only undefeated team on the weekend.
The two wins improved the Lumberjacks' record to 2-1-0 on the season. NAU was defeated in its season opener, 3-0, by Cal State Northridge. The Lumberjacks are led by Cee Cee Odorfer, who is tops on the team with two goals and five points on the season. Elizabeth Winkelblech has been a difference-maker in goal for NAU, as her 26 saves and .839 save percentage have been crucial to the NAU defense. Sarah Neatherton (two assists), Lindsey Carey (one goal) and Sarah Vallen (one goal) have also scored for the Lumberjacks.

Hoosiers Topple TTU
Indiana brought home its first victory of the 2006 season with a 4-0 triumph over visiting Texas Tech (2-2-0) on Saturday, Sept. 2, on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers went undefeated in the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge to improve their record on the season to 1-2-1.
Lindsay McCarthy netted her first goal of the year in the 13th minute to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead. Carrie DeFreece broke up the right side and sent a cross through the box to McCarthy at the back post, and the junior deposited it in the back of the net for the goal.
IU made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute, when the Hoosiers were awarded a free kick 35 yards out from goal. Lauren Lamping took the kick and sent it toward the far post, and the ball cleared everyone and tucked just under the crossbar for the senior's first career goal.
Indiana strung the lead to three in the 35th minute, this time on a beautiful play by Megan Pipkens and Kristin Radcliffe. Pipkens beat her defender and moved into the goal box, then slid a pass to a streaking Radcliffe, who buried it for her second goal of the season. The Hoosiers outshot the Red Raiders 9-1 in the first half.
In the second half, Lamping made it three straight games with an assist, this time on a goal by Katy Stewart. Lamping took a corner from the left side and sent it into the box, where Stewart fended off a Texas Tech player and headed it off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net in the 48th minute.
Light the Lamp
Lauren Lamping's goal against Texas Tech was the first of the senior's career. Lamping also added an assist in the contest, making it three games in a row that she has registered an assist. Lamping has already set a career high in goals, assists (three) and points (five). She leads the team in both assists and points this season, and has been a starter on D in all four contests, where the Hoosiers have allowed just four goals and 35 shots in four contests.
Scoring Surge
The Hoosiers' four goals on Saturday night were the most for IU since Oct. 29, 2004, when IU defeated Butler 4-0 on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. It was also the first time since Sept. 10, 2004, that the Hoosiers had seen four different players score goals in a regular-season contest. In that game, a 5-1 victory over Florida International, then-sophomores Carrie DeFreece and Megan Pipkens each tallied a goal and an assist and then-freshman Kristin Radcliffe scored a goal. DeFreece and Pipkens each tallied assists in Saturday night's contest and Radcliffe scored a goal against Texas Tech. All six Hoosiers that scored points in the game were upperclassmen.
Shooting Them Down
On Saturday, the Hoosiers outshot Texas Tech by a 19-8 margin, the fourth game in a row that IU has registered more shots than its opponent. This season, Indiana has registered a staggering 80 shots, led by freshman Kristin Arnold's 11. Likewise, the IU defense has been strong, limiting opponents to just 35 shots on the season, an average of less than nine shots per game against.
The last time that the Hoosiers outshot their opposition four games in a row was Sept. 4-18, 2005, when IU went five games in a row with more shots than its opponents.
Climbing the Ladder
Junior Kristin Radcliffe's goal against Texas Tech was her ninth career tally, as she nears the top 10 in that category. She is just two behind Shelly Gruszka and Quincy Wolkowitz, who are tied for ninth. Radcliffe is tied for eighth all-time in game-winning goals (four) and needs just two more to vault into the top five.
Several other Hoosiers are approaching milestones, including senior forward Megan Pipkens. Pipkens is tied for seventh on the Hoosiers in career assists (11) and is eighth in career shots (107). The Holt, Mich., native is just tied with Kelly Kram for seventh and is one behind Kris Fosdick on the all-time list.
Junior Stacey Van Boxmeer's 82 career saves are the fifth-most all time, but the Collingwood, Ont., native is less than 20 percent of the way to the all-time record, as Merit Elzey recorded 442 saves in her career as a Hoosier.
Extra Time
IU's overtime affair with Baylor was the second straight overtime game for the Hoosiers that ended in a 1-1 tie. Indiana tied No. 24 Purdue in its regular season finale in 2005 by that score. IU is now 4-3-1 against the Big 12 in its history, with five of the seven games coming against Missouri.
Going Blank
IU's 4-0 shutout of Texas Tech was the first shutout for the Hoosiers since Sept. 18, 2005, when they blanked Bowling Green 2-0. Stacey Van Boxmeer made four saves for the Hoosiers in the contest to improve her save percentage to .714 on the season and lower her goals against average to 0.99.
Making Debuts
Four different Hoosiers saw their first collegiate action in Saturday night's contest. Sophomore Megan Reinhardt played the final 17:05 of the contest in goal for the Hoosiers. Also making their IU debuts were redshirt freshman Becky Prokopiak and true freshmen Jenny Ball and Kathryn Zachman. All nine incoming freshman have now seen action in 2006.
First Goal Wins
On Saturday, Lindsay McCarthy scored at the 12:39 mark to put the Hoosiers up 1-0 in the contest. It marked the first time this season that IU has scored first in a contest, and also the first time the Hoosiers have held a lead this year. In 2005, Indiana recorded a 7-1-0 record when scoring first.
Everybody Plays
Indiana head coach Mick Lyon can't say that he hasn't had a look at any of his players this season, as all 26 players saw action in Saturday's 4-0 win over Texas Tech. Thirteen different players recorded shots in the contest and eight recorded shots on goal.
Offensive Outburst
The Hoosiers posted 27 shots against Creighton on Sunday, Aug. 27, matching the 2005 season high, which was set in IU's 2-0 win over Bowling Green on Sept. 18, 2005. IU also registered 10 corner kicks in the Creighton game, which was the most for a Hoosier team since IU put up 11 against DePaul on Oct. 24, 2004.
Starting Quickly
In the Hoosiers' season-opener against California, three of IU's nine freshmen - Jessica Boots, Christie Kotynski and Taylor Fallon - were in the starting lineup, while Kristin Arnold and Liz Holby also saw playing time in the contest. Boots, Kotynski and Fallon also started against Creighton, and were joined in the starting lineup by Arnold and fellow freshman Kelly Lawrence, meaning that five of IU's 11 starters were freshmen in that contest. Holby entered as a substitute in the Creighton game as well. Kotynski and Boots have now stared all four of the Hoosiers' contests this season, while Lawrence and Arnold have started three apiece.
Hoosiers Earn Tie
The Hoosiers got a goal from Christie Kotynski with just over ten minutes to play as the Hoosiers earned a 1-1 tie with Baylor on Friday at Lawrence Park in Indianapolis. IU got the equalizer in the 80th minute off a wild scramble in front of the net. Lauren Lamping took a free kick from 35 yards out and sent it into the box. The ball deflected off Taylor Fallon and a Baylor player and rolled into the goal to knot the game at one. Fallon and Lamping were awarded assists on the play.
The Hoosiers dominated the second half statistically, outshooting the Bears by a 12-1 margin. Ashley Holder made four saves in the half to keep Baylor alive in the contest. IU outshot the Bears 23-8 in the game.
Baylor scored its lone goal in the 20th minute on a goal by Anna Schuch.
