On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize the top performances in Hoosier Athletics by selecting an IU Athlete of the Week. For the week ending on Sept. 3, sophomore cornerback Chris Phillips is the winner. This is the first honor for both Phillips and the football team this season.
Phillips, who earned a starting cornerback position in training camp, gathered his first career interception and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter of the Hoosiers' 39-20 win over Western Michigan. The sophomore's pick helped the Hoosiers, who were leading 7-3 at the time, pull away for good against Western Michigan. The Atlanta, Ga., native also added four tackles in the contest.
Coupled with Tracy Porter's 86-yard punt return, the Hoosiers scored on an interception and punt in the same game for the first time since 1980. Phillips' touchdown also was the first interception return by a Hoosier player since Nov. 13, 2004 (Kyle Killion).
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9, when they take on in-state rival Ball State in Muncie at 6:30 p.m. EDT.
Phillips was one of many Hoosier athletes that turned in strong performances for the week, as he bested Stephanie Greer (women's cross country), Lauren Lamping (women's soccer), Brennon Plotner (men's cross country), Lydia Schrott (field hockey), Erica Short (volleyball) and Darren Yeagle (men's soccer).
