Hoosiers Set To Open Season At NCAA Central Preview

The Indiana University men's golf team heads to the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate/NCAA Central Regional Preview, Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 9-10, in Sugar Grove, Ill., to open the 2006-07 season. Northern Illinois will host the event at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club.
SETTING THE SCENE
The event consists of three rounds, with 36 holes played on Saturday and the final 18 holes taking place on Sunday. Along with Indiana and Northern Illinois, 10 other teams will comprise the field. Big Ten rival Michigan joins the Hoosiers in the field, which will be rounded out by Kansas State, Marquette, Missouri, Southern Methodist, Kansas, Ball State, Colorado, Louisville and Akron.
Tournament play begins Saturday with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. (EST) with the second round following the conclusion of play. On Sunday, the final round will commence at 8:45 a.m.
Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club, which will play at a par 72 with a yardage of 7,325, is ranked No. 45 according to Golf Digest's America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses and will host the 2007 NCAA Men's Central Regional on May 17-19. It will also be the site of the 2009 Solheim Cup, which pits the best female professional golfers from the United States against their counterparts from Europe.
PARTICIPATING HOOSIERS
The Hoosiers will send a team of five players, and one individual, to the NCAA Central Regional Preview. Sophomores Jorge Campillo, Drew Allenspach, Seth Brandon and Brandon Pike will be joined by junior Santiago Quirarte on the scored team and senior Aaron Harrell will represent the Cream and Crimson as an individual at the tournament. The quartet of sophomores finished second in the nation in Golfstat's Freshman Class Impact Rating and wrapped up their first collegiate season with a scoring average of 73.89 between them.
REVISITING THE 2005 NCAA CENTRAL REGIONAL PREVIEW
In 2005, the Hoosiers finished in 11th place at the NCAA Central Regional Preview, held at Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio. The Hoosiers carded an 894 (300-297-297) for their placement, and Campillo led Indiana with a tie for 15th in his first collegiate tournament. Campillo turned in rounds of 75-71-72 for a 218 total.
Louisville earned the team title with a score of 871 (293-296-282) for three rounds and Gary Woodland of Kansas earned medalist honors with an 11-under-par total of 202 (67-66-69).

PICKING UP SOME HARDWARE
Campillo wrapped up his first season by earning a spot on the PING All-Midwest Region team as well as All-Big Ten honors and the unanimous Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Campillo became the first IU rookie since former standout Jeff Overton in 2002 to be selected to the All-Big Ten team. Those honors wrapped up a season in which the newcomer had been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week three times.
Not to be outdone, head coach Mike Mayer was named both Big Ten and Midwest Region Coach of the Year. It was his first time earning either honor and the first Big Ten recognition for a Hoosier coach since Sam Carmichael collected the accolade in 1998.
RECORD SETTING
Campillo cemented his place in the Indiana record book by shattering the all-time freshman scoring record with a mark of 72.67 in 39 rounds in 2005-06. That average was also good for eighth place in IU lore. Campillo also moved into a tie for the fifth-best single round score in Hoosier history with his 67 in the final round of the NCAA Eastern Regional.
If not for Campillo, Allenspach would have snagged the honor for himself. Allenspach wrapped up the year with a stroke average of 74.15, second on the all-time freshman list, and he narrowly beat out Brandon for that spot. Brandon wrapped up the season with an average of 74.33 in 39 rounds. He also posted the best score of any Hoosier on the season and his 66 in the first round of the Big Ten Championships tied for the fourth best in program history.
ENTERING THE WINNERS CIRCLE
On April 9, Campillo wrapped up the title at the Boilermaker Invitational by eight strokes for his first individual title, becoming the first true freshman to win an event since current IU assistant coach Josh Brewer was victorious in 1995 at the Legends Intercollegiate. It was also the first time that a Hoosier had won a tournament since Overton in 2005.
The following weekend, fellow newcomer Brandon shared medalist honors at the Kepler Intercollegiate. It went down as a share of first place for the Dalton, Ga., native after he dropped the second playoff hole, and he joins Campillo and Brewer as the only true freshmen to claim first place in the program's history.
NCAA EAST REGIONAL RECAP
Despite a phenomenal rally on the final day at the NCAA East Regional, the Indiana men's golf 2005-06 campaign came to an end on May 20. Needing a low number in the third and last round, the Hoosiers shot a 1-under 287 (one of 6 squads in the 27-team field to shoot under par) to tie for 11th place at 891 (299-305-287) with Georgia State (298-298-295) and Georgia Southern (295-307-289).
Campillo led the Hoosier rally with a spectacular 5-under 67 and closed the event in 10th place (141-player field) with an even-par 216 (71-78-67). Campillo's round tied for the second lowest at the regional and matched former two-time All-American and current PGA Tour member Overton (2002-05) for the low postseason round in Indiana history.
Following the lead of Campillo, Quirarte played a sterling round of golf. Quirarte soared into the top 15 (tie for 14th) with a 3-under 69 on day three. After a 72 and 77 in rounds one and two, respectively, Quirarte earned his best NCAA finish with a 2-over 218.
Brandon collected a share of 59th with a 76 on the closing 18. Brandon recorded nine pars on the first nine but struggled to 4-over on the back.
Allenspach netted his best score of the regional with a 76 on the afternoon. Bouncing back from an 82 in round one, Allenspach ended the tournament with a 75 in round two and his third round 76 for a 233 total.
In the fifth spot, senior Brad Marek started strong before faltering to a 77 for a 54-hole 236 score (82-77-77).
RETURN TRIP TO NCAA REGIONALS
The Cream and Crimson made its third consecutive visit to the NCAA Regionals. In 2003-04, the Hoosiers advanced to the central regional while last season IU tied for 18th place at the eastern regional. Indiana's NCAA selection marked the first time that IU made three straight NCAA appearances since the Hoosiers advanced to six straight from 1972-77. It was also the third NCAA trip in Mayer's eight seasons at the helm.
