Vaziri Takes IU Athlete of the Week Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana swimmer Leila Vaziri has been named the IU Athlete of the Week for the week ending Jan. 14. The award is selected weekly by the IUHOOSIERS.com staff.
Vaziri picked up five wins and three second-place finishes as the 13th-ranked Hoosiers won the Michigan Invitational over the weekend, topping No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 10 Michigan and Illinois.
The Coral Springs, Fla., senior posted six NCAA "B" cuts on the weekend, doing so in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes and the 200- and 400-yard freestyle and medley relays. Vaziri earned her cuts in winning the 100 back, 200 free relay and both medley relays and finishing second in the 200 back and 400 free relay.
She also finished first in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 7:28.74 and was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.47. Vaziri helped the 200 medley relay unit to the fifth-fastest time in school history, while the 400 medley relay posted the sixth-fastest time in IU lore.
Indiana's Stacey Clausing (women's indoor track and field), Matt Coughlin (wrestling), Kiwan Lawson (men's indoor track and field), Sarah McKay (women's basketball) and Roderick Wilmont (men's basketball) were also in contention for the award.

Sr. - St. Mary's, Ohio - St. Mary's Memorial
Clausing led the Hoosiers at the Indiana Open II on Saturday, Jan. 13, winning two events. Clausing finished first in the 60-meter dash in 7.70, and won the 200-meter dash in 24.16. She also picked up a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:49.41.
Matt Coughlin
149 - RFr. - Evansville, Ind. - Mater Dei
Coughlin earned his fifth pin of the year against Eastern Illinois, falling Tommy Reamer at the 1:16 mark of the first period to help IU to a 41-4 victory over the Panthers. Coughlin improved his record to 23-4 on the year and his record in dual meets to 9-0.
Kiwan Lawson
Sr. - Columbus, Ohio - Marion-Franklin
Lawson won a pair of events for the Hoosiers at the Indiana Open II on Saturday, Jan. 13, taking the 200-meter dash in 22.20 and winning the long jump with a leap of 7.16 meters.
Sarah McKay
6-7 - C - Sr. - Victoria, B. C., Canada - Stelly's Secondary
Sarah McKay registered her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds against Iowa on Jan. 11. It was also her first double-double since recording 24 points and 16 rebounds at Ball State on Dec. 31, 2003. McKay rejected five of the Hawkeyes' shots and notched a steal and an assist in the effort. In the Hoosiers' loss at Purdue, McKay scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds. On the weekend, McKay averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game, while shooting 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Roderick Wilmont
6-4 - G - Sr. - Miramar, Fla. - Miramar
Wilmont averaged a double-double with 13.5 points and a team-best 11.0 rebounds as the Hoosiers moved to 3-1 in Big Ten play with wins over Purdue and Penn State. The senior recorded the second double-double of his career and this season with a career-high 25 points (most in conference play this season) and a career-best 12 boards at Penn State. Wilmont shot 7-of-17 from 3-point range in 37 minutes. The seven 3s are the second most in school history, while the 17 attempts are the most in IU lore. He recorded 20 points in the first half and hit six treys in the opening stanza. Against Purdue, Wimont recorded a game-high 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. He has four double-digit rebounding efforts this season and is second on the team with 10.8 points and 6.4 rebounds. Wilmont is fourth in league play with 6.8 rebounds per game.
