BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team dropped to 12-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference following a 3-0 loss to the Spartans of Michigan State Friday night. Senior Juli Pierce excelled, however, racking up 16 digs on the night. There were a school-record 11,086 people in attendance Friday night.
Junior Erica Short paced the Hoosiers with 15 kills and Freshman Ashley Benson led the way with five blocks in addition to her five kills.
Benson started off hot, connecting on four of her five put-aways in the first game. Short also ripped four terminations in the opening act. Michigan State's Katie Johnson proved to be too much, however, recording eight kills in the Spartans' 30-25 game one win.
Ashley Schatzle from Michigan State compiled eight kills of her own in game two, helping to build an early lead. The Hoosiers took a timeout at 14-19 to regroup, and it worked. Indiana surged back into the game, tying the score as late as 25-25. Unfortunately, the momentum ceased and Michigan State pulled off the 30-26 win in the end.
Senior Lauren Ditteon swatted a kill to start things off in game three, but the Spartans responded by taking 11 of the next 14 points for a big lead. Once again, the Cream and Crimson battled back and gave themselves a chance at the end. Sophomore Kelsey Hall played a big role in the comeback as she hit .400 (4-0-9) in the third game. Despite the late game rally, IU dropped game three 30-26.
The Hoosiers get right back at it Saturday night with a 7 p.m. ET match-up versus Northwestern. It is "Jam the Gym Night," and the match will be held at University Gym (located on the corner of the bypass and 10th street).
