CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Indiana saw its unbeaten streak snapped at 13 games as Illinois took a 3-0 victory on Friday night at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium. Ella Masar scored a pair of goals for the Illini in the victory, as the Hoosiers fell to 11-2-2 (5-1-1 Big Ten).
Masar put the Illini in front at 17:19 with her seventh goal of the season. Off a pass from the midfield, Masar cut hard to her left to move one-on-one with Lauren Hollandsworth on the left side of the box. Masar blasted a shot hard to the near side, and Hollandsworth deflected the ball with a diving attempt, but it carried into the corner to make the score 1-0 in favor of the home squad.
The Hoosiers had a strong opportunity several minutes later on a cross by Chloe McKay that Lindsay McCarthy shot on goal. But Lindsay Carstens was able to turn that aside and keep the score 1-0.
In the 40th minute, a long ball to the left side Cory Steigerwald drew a foul in the box that resulted in a penalty kick for the Illini. Mary T. McDonnell took the PK and sent it into the upper right corner to up the score to 2-0 with 3:43 to play in the frame.
Masar made it 3-0 at 59:42, with Masar converting again for Illinois. Chichi Nweke took the ball on the left side of the box and crossed it to a streaking Masar on the back post. Hollandsworth once again was able to deflect the attempt, but it carried just past the goal line for her eighth goal of the season.
Though the Hoosiers were able to take 12 shots to match Illinois' 12, Lindsey Carstens made three saves to preserve the shutout.
The Hoosiers will wrap up their home season on Sunday when they host Oakland at noon. The game will be Senior Day as the Hoosiers honor seniors Beverly Markwort, Lindsay McCarthy, Kate Nierman, Katy Stewart and Suzie Teixeira as they play their final game at Armstrong Stadium.
