KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The Indiana women's golf team is tied for 13th after nearly two full rounds at the Palmetto Intercollegiate being held at the Oak Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The second round was suspended with three holes to play due to darkness. Tournament play will begin tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. with the conclusion of round two, followed immediately by the third and final round..
The Hoosiers got off to a slow start with a 317 in round one to sit in 12th place in the 20-team tournament. Battling tough course conditions, including a fierce wind, Indiana began to find its groove as play progressed.
"I think a lot of really good things transpired out on the course today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "I think we really began to hit our stride in the second round and will come out firing tomorrow."
Senior Elaine Harris led the way in round one, shooting a 74 (+2). A rough start to the day came with bogeys on four of the first five holes with one birdie mixed in on 12. She would settle down as the round went on, going -3 on holes 14 through three to get back to even par. A double bogey on four and a bogey on five put her back at +3 going into the final hole, but Harris came through with a birdie on eight to close the round. She was 11-over through 13 holds in the second round.
"Elaine had a remarkable first round and really set the tone," Wallman said. "Everyone began to get better as things went on, especially in the second round."
Laura Nochta was +7 (79) for the initial round. She recorded pars on the first four holes, but tripped up with back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 and a double on 14. Her only birdie of he round came on the first hole and she ended by going three over on the final three holes. Nochta sat at +6 through 14 holes in round two.
Lauren Harling shot an 82 in round one (+10) but had the shot of the day with an eagle on the fourth hole. After one trip through the course, Harling was on her way to a solid second round score before darkness forced the competitors off the course. She was 3-over with three holes remaining.
Amber Lindgren matched Harling's first round with an 82 and had a pair of birdies on holes 11 and one in the second round. Lindgren sits at +9 for the second round with four holes outstanding.
Anita Gahir was making a run in the second round before darkness slowed her down. Round one saw her shoot an 83 (+11), but Gahir was making a comeback. She was even through the first three holes before a birdie on 12 put her at one under. A couple of bogeys put her back over, but a birdie on the third hole gave her a score of +2 before play was suspended.
