BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Six weeks into the Big Ten schedule, the Hoosiers are part of a six-team tie for fifth place in the conference standings. Indiana travels to Ohio State Friday night before taking on the No. 1-ranked team in the country, Penn State.
Freshman Morgan Miller has aided the Hoosiers to their 14 wins thus far with a combination of strong service and solid back row play. The Elkhart, Indiana native took a few minutes recently to sit down with iuhoosiers.com and answer a few questions.
Why did you choose to come to IU?
"I liked the campus the first time I saw it, but I chose IU mainly because I wanted to play volleyball here."
Where is your favorite place to go on the Bloomington campus and why?
"I haven't really been to many places on campus yet, but the Union is a very cool and interesting place to hang out."
There are a number of parents and family members that have attended nearly every match this season whether it's home or away, including your parents Nick and Sheryl. What does it mean to your team to have that support and family atmosphere?
"It's always nice to look up and see familiar faces. I really appreciate all of our parents' support and encouragement. Fans make the game more fun. Some of our fans are crazier than others and tend to really get into the match, like my father."
Last weekend was tough with two losses at home. What did the team learn and take from that weekend to help succeed the rest of the season?
"We need to continue to stay positive and keep working hard in practice. We aren't going to surprise anyone the second time around, so we need to keep fighting."
Sitting at 14-10 overall and tied for fifth place in the Big Ten, your team is in the thick of things for an NCAA berth with another pair of conference matches scheduled for this weekend. What do you expect at Ohio State and at #1 Penn State?
"We beat Ohio State once and we plan to prepare the best we can to do it again. In the Penn State match, we want to have fun, stay competitive and fight. It's always a great day for an upset."
What is the best part about the travel of IU Volleyball? Who is the funniest person on the team or staff and why? Your role on the team has increased significantly over the last two weeks, including playing a huge part in the win over in-state rival Purdue on the Big Ten Network. What are your thoughts on the increased role? What was it like to play in the Junior Olympics in 2002 and 2005-06?
"They believe in every single one of their players. They know what we are capable of and continue to push and support us on and off the court. I fell like they care about every single individual personally, not just the player aspect."
"I really love flying to all of our matches. The jet rocks, and I would say it is my favorite part about the travel."
"I think everyone has their funny moments. Gabby (Allison) is funny all the time, but a lot more people are making it in the 'quote book.' I love Kelsey Hall's attitude and personality; she cracks me up."
"I'm just really excited I'm getting the opportunity to help my team."
"Playing in the Junior Olympics was really exciting. Every team works so hard during the club season to make it there, it's a huge accomplishment. The competition at Junior Olympics is fierce and the environment is whistles and volleyball everywhere. Playing in it definitely helped me reach the next level of competition."
