KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The Indiana women's golf team had a solid final round with a score of 310 to move up three spots to 10th on the final day of the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Oak Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The Hoosiers posted a three-round total of 936 (317-309-310), 30 strokes behind champion East Carolina. Nebraska (909) took second, followed by Kansas State (925), Maryland (927) and Georgia State (928).
"I think we did really great things out there, but when we made an error it turned out to be a costly one," said head coach Clint Wallman. "There were several top teams here, ourselves included, and the scores ended up a little higher than I would have thought due to the windy and cool conditions. I think all of us felt like we were capable of doing better."
Individually, IU was led by sophomore Anita Gahir who bounced back from an 83 in the first round to shoot +1 in round two (73) and a 75 in round three to finish at +15, good for a tie for 21st (231). Gahir's second round was highlighted by birdies on holes three, four, seven and 12 for her lowest one-round total of the fall season.
"She is still battling an injury but was really solid and got better with each round," Wallman said. "She had some quality shots and really had an opportunity to shoot low if she had been able to make a few puts."
Indiana began the day by completing round two after yesterday's session was called with three holes remaining due to darkness. It turned out to be the team's best round of tournament as they came in at 309, led by Gahir's 73.
After going 10-over (82) in the first round, senior Lauren Harling also found her stroke in the second round, posting a 3-over 75. She closed out the round with birdies on two of the final four holes and carried that in to round three where she shot a 6-over 78. Her three-round score of 235 put her in a tie for 34th for the tournament.
Laura Nochta led the Hoosiers in the final round with a 74 (+2), giving her a three-round score of 232 (79-79-74) and a tie for 26th. The most steady of the IU players, Nochta was the only Hoosier to shoot under 80 in all three rounds. Her hot start in round three saw her birdie three of the first four holes to put her at -3 through five. It was a tough stretch in the back nine as she bogeyed four of the next six, but she recovered with pars on holes one through four.
"I was really proud of Laura's play," Wallman said. "She started out the day really well but ran into a little trouble there at the end."
After a team-best 74 in round one, senior Elaine Harris came in with an 85 in the final round to complete the tournament at 241 (74-82-85). She finished tied for 57th.
Rounding out the IU contingent was junior Amber Lindgren in a tie for 78th (82-83-83=248). Lindgren had a pair of birdies in round three, coming in a stroke under on the first and 18th holes.
The Palmetto Intercollegiate marked the end of the fall season for Indiana. In five tournaments the Hoosiers posted five top-10 finishes, highlighted by a second-place showing at the Mary Fossum Invitational.
"The fall break will be a welcome one and give us a chance to reflect on each player and direction we are headed," Wallman said. "We will reassess and make adjustments as we head into the spring."
