COLUMBIA, Mo. - With four of five golfers posting improved scores in the second round, the Indiana University women's golf team sits in third place after two rounds of the 10-team Johnie Imes Invitational at The Course at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. The tournament concludes Tuesday with a single round.
The host Missouri Tigers enter the final round in the lead at +19 (297-298=595). Princeton is second at +41 (306-311=617) with the Hoosiers just one stroke behind at +42 (310-308=618).
"Obviously it is not quite where we want to be," said head coach Clint Wallman. "This is a difficult course and we were not quite hitting on all cylinders.
"Heading into tomorrow, we just need to focus on ourselves and our play. We can't worry about what Missouri or Princeton are doing."
Sophomore Laura Nochta was tied for first after the opening round with a 72 (E) and is currently tied for fourth with a score of 150 (72-78). Nochta opened with a bogey but took command of the course by going -4 over the next 12 holes. A bogey on 14 and a double bogey on 15 brought her back down to 72 for the round. Nochta started the second round slowly with a bogey on two of the first three holes.
Nochta was unable to carry that momentum into the second round, shooting a 41 (+5) on the front nine. The back nine was much kinder with just one bogey and pars the rest of the way to finish at +6 (78).
Sophomore Kellye Belcher had the hot hand in round two with a 72 (E) and sits in tied for fourth after two rounds with a score of 150 (78-72). Belcher posted a 78 (+6) in round one, recording two birdies in the round, including the final hole. In round two, Belcher became the first Hoosier golfer to record an eagle when she finished the par-5 10th in three strokes. Despite a bogey on 11, Belcher birdied 12 and was even the rest of the way to drop back down to even par for the round.
Elaine Harris shot a 77 (+5) in round one but came back with a 75 (+3) in round two and is eighth entering tomorrow's final round (152). After shooting an even-par 36 on the front nine, Harris bogeyed or double bogeyed five of the first six holes on the back nine. She recovered with a birdie on 18 to close the round five over.
It was a rough start to the second round, going +3 (39) over the first nine holes. Like her teammates, Harris found her groove down the stretch, including a birdie on 17.
Senior Lauren Harling was +21 (83-82) over the two rounds, while junior Amber Lindgren was two strokes behind at +23 (84-83). Competing as an individual, redshirt freshman Emily Johnson saw a dramatic improvement in the second round, shaving 10 strokes off her first round score to move up to a tie for 28th at +20 (87-77=154).
"This is a course you really have to think on," Wallman said. "Having played through it twice now I think they are used to seeing where the hazards and bunkers are and will be more comfortable out there tomorrow."
