COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Indiana University women's golf team posted its fourth-straight top-five finish, coming in third at the Johnie Imes Invitational at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. The Hoosiers came in at +61 (310-308-307=925), trailing host and Missouri (297-298-297=892) and Princeton (306-311-305=922).
The Hoosiers were in a battle all day long with Princeton for the second slot. After starting out the day trailing the Tigers by a shot, Indiana took over second midway through the third round. Princeton jumped back to second by a stroke with three holes to play. The two teams were tied with two holes to play before the Tigers pulled away by three strokes.
"Obviously, this was not the round we wanted to play," said head coach Clint Wallman. "Once again we started out the day well but stumbled a bit at the finish."
Laura Nochta was the Hoosiers' top finisher, placing fifth at +10 (72-78-76=226). Tied for fourth entering the third round at +6, Nochta got off to a solid start at even par through the first eight holes. A bogey on nine was followed by four-straight pars before the 14th hole tripped her up to put her at 4-over. Pars on the final four holes left her at +4 (76) for the round.
Nochta has finished in the top 10 in three of four tournaments this fall.
After scores of 77 and 75 on day one, Elaine Harris posted the top Hoosier round of the day, coming in at +3 (75) to finish at +11 for the three rounds (77-75-75=227), good for sixth. Harris had a pair of birdies on the front nine, coming in -1 on the fifth and eighth holes.
After a solid first day where she was tied for fourth at +6, sophomore Kellye Belcher finished the tournament tied for 11th at +17 (78-72-83=233). Unable to carry the momentum of yesterday's 72 in the second round, Belcher opened the third round with a 39 (+3) on the front nine. Things did not get better on the back half with a double bogey on 11 and seven strokes on the par-3 12th hole. A bogey on 13 put her at +10 for the round and she finished at +11 with a bogey on 18.
Amber Lindgren carded a 244 (84-83-87) to finish at +28 and tied for 26th. Her up-and-down final round started with a birdie and three bogeys, followed by four pars and a birdie. The roller coaster continued with three-straight bogeys on 13-15, followed by pars on 16-18.
Lauren Harling was one spot behind Lindgren at +29 (83-83-79=245), finishing in a tie for 28th. After a double bogey to open the third round on the third hole, Harling found her groove with pars on 11 of the next 12 holes. Another double bogey on 16 put her at +7 for the round, which is where she finished.
Competing as an individual, redshirt freshman Emily Johnson tied for 23rd at +27 (87-77-79=243). Johnson opened with bogeys on 12 and 13, but it was her play down the stretch that stood out as she went 1-under on the front nine to finish with a 79 for the day.
The Hoosiers will take a weekend off before concluding the fall season on Oct. 28-29 at the Kiawah Island Invitational in South Carolina.
"There are a lot of things we want to work on in that time," Wallman said. "We need to take a look at some technical areas, as well as our short game. We need to play more aggressively, like I know we are capable of."
