LAST TIME OUT
Sophomore left back Kevin Alston recorded the first two goals of his career as the No. 17 Hoosiers dropped another team from the unbeaten ranks with a 2-0 victory over No. 24 Michigan State Saturday night at Jerry Yeagley Field and Bill Armstrong Stadium.
Winners of four straight matches, Indiana improves to 7-3-1 overall, 2-0 in Big Ten play. Michigan State drops to 7-1-2, 1-1-1 in Big Ten action.
It was an uneventful first half early on as the two teams felt each other out. A quick sequence of shots in the 19th minute from IU's Neil Wilmarth and Billy Weaver ignited the crowd, with Michigan State goalkeeper Chris Austin recorded a save on Weaver's attempt. The Spartans countered and a shot from Doug DeMartin was stopped by IU goalkeeper Chay Cain.
It was more back-and-forth play until Alston put the Hoosiers on top at 38:49 with his first career goal. Dribbling the ball around the Michigan State defense, Alston took his shot from about 10 yards out and found the far post for the score.
"It felt great," Alston said. "I have been trying all season to put one in, but they all seem to have been bouncing off the posts. It is a great confidence booster."
Indiana held a 9-4 advantage in shot attempts at the half, with just one of the Spartans' shots on frame.
Austin, who entered the game having allowed just five goals all season, gave up his second of the game and the second to Alston in the 54th minute. The Hoosiers' second score came off a restart. As Billy Weaver, Brad Ring and Daniel Kelly gathered around the ball about 10 yards outside the penalty area, it was Kelly who sent a tap to Alston who was coming on from the left side. Alston took the ball just inside the penalty area and unleashed a shot which found the far post yet again.
Alston led the Hoosiers' attack with three shots, all on goal. Ring and Wilmarth had two attempts each as Indiana finished the match with an 11-9 shot advantage.
"I would like us to take our chances better," head coach Mike Freitag said. "All in all, I am pleased with the effort. These guys are making it difficult to select a starting lineup because so many of them can contribute."
Michigan State nearly got a goal back with just under 17 minutes to play as Louis Stephens had a clean look at the net, but the attempt bounced off the right post and out of harms way. That was one of just three on-goal looks for the night as Cain recorded his fourth shutout of the season.
MSU forward Doug DeMartin, who entered the match leading the Big Ten in shots with 36, was limited to just two attempts on the evening.
It was the second time in as many Saturdays that the Hoosiers knocked off an undefeated Big Ten team. Last Saturday Indiana was a 3-2 winner over Michigan in Ann Arbor.
LEAGUE DOMINATION
• Since the Big Ten began recognizing men's soccer in 1991, the Hoosier have dominated the league.
• The Hoosiers are 75-7-7 in regular season matches, tallying nearly 30 more victories than second-place team Penn State (49).
• Indiana has never lost in its Big Ten opener, going 14-0-3 in those matches.

• Indiana has also been crowned regular season champion 11 times, including nine-straight seasons from 1996-2004.

• IU had had a league-record 10 Big Ten Players of the Year, including the last two seasons.
• The Hoosiers have also boasted the Freshman of the Year each of the last two years.
OUT OF NOWHERE
• Playing in his 31st career game on Saturday, sophomore Kevin Alston was still searching for his first career goal.
• Unable to wait any longer, he unleashed a pair of scores, including the game winner in a 2-0 victory over No. 24 Michigan State.
• Alston's first goal was unassisted as he took on a pair of MSU defenders before unleashing a shot from about 10 yards out.
• The second score was a perfectly-designed set piece. Alston came streaking in down the left side to collect the pass, sending his shot in to the far back post.
• Alston finished the night with a team-best three shots, all of which were on goal.
• For his efforts, Alston was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and to the Soccer America, College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer Teams of the Week.
TOUGH DEFENDING
• The Indiana defense did an excellent job limiting the offensive opportunities of some of the top players in the country.
• On Sept. 29, it held U.S. National Youth Team member Peri Marosevic in check.
• The 2006 second-team All-Big Ten pick entered the game as the team's leader in shots attempts (21) and goals scored.
• Against the Hoosiers, Marosevic was limited to just one shot attempt.
• Indiana recorded its fourth shutout of the season with a 1-0 win over UIC on Oct. 1.
• The Hoosier defense limited the Flames to just three shots on goal.
• On Oct. 6, the Hoosiers were facing an undefeated Michigan State team which featured Doug DeMartin, the Big Ten's leader in shots and goals.
• DeMartin got off just two shots against the Hoosiers, only one of which was on goal.
• The Hoosiers have posted two-straight shutouts.
WEAVING HIS MAGIC
• Junior Billy Weaver has worked himself into an integral part of the Hoosier attack.
• The week of Sept. 24-29, Weaver played a part in three of five goals scored by Indiana as it went 2-0.
• Against Butler on Sept. 26, Weaver assisted on both goals in a 2-0 win over the Bulldogs.
• On the first goal he sent a cross into Lee Hagedorn who headed it home for the score.
• Goal No. 2 came off a restart with Weaver sending service into the box, where Eric Alexander got his head on it.
• It was the junior's turn to score on Sept. 29 in a 3-2 overtime win at Michigan. Weaver gave IU a 1-0 lead after collecting Brad Ring's rebound and slotting the ball home.
• For his efforts he was named to the College Soccer News and Soccer America Teams of the Week on Oct. 1, his first national honors at IU.
• Weaver appeared in just 19 games over his first two seasons, registering two goals in 2005 and none in 2006.
• The Michigan native has appeared in all 11 matches so far this season, earning five starts.
• Weaver has taken 10 shots on the season, six of which have been on goal.
EARNING THEIR KEEP
• Looking to inject some life into the Hoosiers play, head coach Mike Freitag has shaken up his lineup, giving some of the younger guys a chance to step up and contribute.
• Taking full advantage of that opportunity has been redshirt freshman Neil Wilmarth.
• A scrappy player who never quits working, Wilmarth earned the respect of the coaches and was given the opportunity to start against Butler on Sept. 26.
• Wilmarth took full advantage, wreaking havoc on the Bulldogs' defense from the first whistle.
• He was constantly in the action around the Butler net, whether creating opportunities for his teammates or taking the shot himself. He finished the night with two attempts.
• On the season Wilmarth has appeared in nine games, totaling an assist and 11 shots.
• Since inserting Wilmarth in the starting lineup, the Hoosiers are 4-0.
• Another player whose hustle and grit has earned him a starting spot is freshman Rich Balchan. Balchan has started each of the last five games in the midfield.
• Balchan recorded his first career goal on Sept. 21 against UAB.
SUTTER IS IU MALE SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
• Midfielder Nick Sutter was named the IU Male Scholar Athlete of the Month for the month of September.
• Sutter has appeared in two matches this season for the Hoosiers and started one match against Saint Louis on Sept. 15.
• "Nick is a valuable member to our team," IU head men's soccer coach Mike Freitag said. "His minutes in games do not reflect his contributions to our team. He comes and competes everyday at practice and is always there with advice and encouragement for our young players. He is very serious about his studies, which is one of the reasons he chose to transfer from UIC. I am glad that he is a part of our program."
• "Nick has been a pleasure to work with," Indiana academic advisor Korinth Patterson said. "He has made a good adjustment to Indiana University. Nick has come in very academically focused this semester taking advantage of the resources available to help him be successful."
HE IS A WINNER
• Junior Kevin Noschang headed home the game-winning score in the 96th minute for a 3-2 victory at No. 10 Michigan on Sept. 29.
• The score marked Noschang's third-game winning goal of the season, tying him for the Big Ten lead in that category.
• Noschang also put home the winners over No. 1 UCLA and Rhode Island.
• On the season Noschang leads the team in goals scored (four) and total points (nine).
CAIN IS ABLE
• Junior goalkeeper Chay Cain has had a solid season between the pipes for the Hoosiers so far, keeping things close in several games.
• In nearly 960 minutes of play, Cain has tallied 48 saves and allowed nine goals for a 0.84 GAA.
• He also has four shutouts to his credit, including two straight entering the match at Louisville on Oct. 10.
• What does not show up on the box scores are several spectacular saves that Cain has come up with to keep opponents at bay.
• While facing just nine shots in a 2-0 win over Butler on Sept. 26, six of those attempts required Cain to make the save, including two spectacular shots in a three-minute span where leaping punch-overs from Cain prevented goals.
• Cain made a diving stop to his right that kept a sure-fire goal from going in against Saint Louis (Sept. 15), one of five saves on the night.
• He also recorded five saves against Creighton on Sept. 13.
• After allowing just one goal in a pair of wins over Northern Illinois and Rhode Island, Cain was named Most Outstanding Goalkeeper at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
A HALF CENTURY IN THREE YEARS
• With the win over Rhode Island on Sept. 9, head coach Mike Freitag recorded his 50th career victory at the helm of the Indiana program.
• After 79 matches at IU, Freitag has a career record of 54-14-11.
