Hoosiers Have Strong Showing at Grand Prix Italy

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - Indiana University senior swimmers Ben Hesen and Todd Patrick have had a solid start to their stay at the three-day Grand Prix Italy in Viareggio, Genova and Travagliato, Italy.
In the event opener Nov. 22 in Viareggio, Hesen placed first in his heat in the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 25.29 and went on to finish third in the finals, touching the wall in 24.77. Competing the 100-meter back, Hesen was third in his heat at 54.55 and qualified for the finals where he finished seventh (54.56).
Also representing IU, Patrick swam the 100-meter freestyle where his time of 52.06 in the prelims was 40th overall. Patrick also competed in the 200-meter individual medley where he took first in his heat (2:02.64) and third in the finals (2:01.38).
Day two of the meet took place Friday in Genova. Patrick opened with the 50-meter freestyle and was 12th overall with a time of 23.24. Competing in the 200-meter backstroke preliminaries, Hesen clocked a time of 2:04.48, good for ninth.
Hesen was fifth overall in the prelims of the 50-meter butterfly and took third in the finals with a time of 24.27. Patrick was the top qualifier in the 100-meter individual medley with a time of 56.37 and went on to finish third in the final (55.28).
The meet concludes on Sunday, Nov. 25 in Travagliato.
