The Opening Tip
The Indiana men's basketball team is ranked eighth in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and AP Poll and will battle Georgia Tech in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. IU is coming off an 80-65 loss to Xavier in the championship game of the Chicago Invitational Challenge. Georgia Tech is 3-2 after defeating Notre Dame, 70-69, to finish in third place at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, November 19. This will be just the second meeting between the two programs. Indiana defeated Georgia Tech, 87-65, on December 29, 1969 at the Bruin Classic in Los Angeles. The Hoosiers are 2-4 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge with wins at North Carolina in 2001 and over Maryland in Indianapolis in 2002. Last year, IU fell at Duke, 54-51. IU is 27-17 all-time against the ACC.
The Coaches
Two-time National Coach of the Year Kelvin Sampson was named the 26th head coach in Indiana University history on March 29, 2006 and enters his second year with the Hoosiers and 25th as a collegiate head coach. He has notched 16 20-plus win seasons and is 480-269 (.652). In his first year with the Cream and Crimson, Sampson's squad finished 21-11 and tied a school record by going 15-0 at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers earned their 34th NCAA Tournament bid, advanced to the second round of the West Regional after defeating Gonzaga, 70-57, in the first round, and were ranked as high as 19th in the country during the regular season.
Coach Paul Hewitt is in his eighth season at Georgia Tech and has a 130-97 (.573) record. The Yellow Jackets were 20-12 last season and made their fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament under Hewitt.
Up Next
Indiana will also play at #18 Southern Illinois on December 1 before beginning a five-game homestand with Tennessee State on December 3 and Kentucky on December 8. The Hoosiers will close out the calendar year with games against Western Carolina (December 15), Coppin State (December 22) and Chicago State (December 29).
