The Opening Tip
The Indiana men's basketball team is ranked 15th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and AP Poll and will travel to Southern Illinois, ranked #22 by the coaches, in the Hoosiers lone road non-conference game of the season. IU is coming off an 83-79 win at home against Georgia Tech in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. SIU is coming off a 70-45 loss to USC in the championship game of the Anaheim Classic. The Hoosiers hold a 4-1 lead in the all-time series, including a 57-47 win in Bloomington last year. The teams have met once in Carbondale, with SIU coming away with a 72-60 win on December 1, 2001. In the three other meetings in Bloomington, IU won 95-63 in 2000, 80-65 in 1963 and 80-57 in 1956.
The Coaches
Two-time National Coach of the Year Kelvin Sampson was named the 26th head coach in Indiana University history on March 29, 2006 and enters his second year with the Hoosiers and 25th as a collegiate head coach. He has notched 16 20-plus win seasons and is 481-269 (.656). In his first year with the Cream and Crimson, Sampson's squad finished 21-11 and tied a school record by going 15-0 at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers earned their 34th NCAA Tournament bid, advanced to the second round of the West Regional after defeating Gonzaga, 70-57, in the first round, and were ranked as high as 19th in the country during the regular season.
Coach Chris Lowery is in his fifth year with the Salukis and is 81-27 and has led SIU to four appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Up Next
Indiana will begin a five-game homestand with Tennessee State on December 3 and Kentucky on December 8. The Hoosiers will close out the calendar year with games against Western Carolina (December 15), Coppin State (December 22) and Chicago State (December 29).
