Hoosiers Begin Play at Western Michigan Super Challenge

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Indiana University women's tennis team began play at the Western Michigan University Super Challenge Friday afternoon. The competition consists of four singles flights, one large double flight and a round robin group of each.

Six of the nine Hoosiers competing in singles earned first round victories. Junior Alba Berdala and Freshman Charlotte Martin each advanced in the "gold" flight. Berdala won a tie-breaker in the first set, 7-2, before finishing off Wichita State's Stephanie Dalmacio with a 6-4 triumph in the second set. Martin had to win a pair of tie breakers in her 7-6(5), 7-6(6) win over No. 125 Janet Kim from Yale.
Sophomore Lindsey Stuckey fought for a 6-4 first set win against Depaul's Kirsten Gambrell. She then rolled in the second set, winning 6-0. Junior Stephanie Heller notched her ninth win of the fall by also downing a DePaul foe. Heller posted a 7-5, 6-2 score over Anna Egorova in the "black" flight. Freshman Myriam Sopel began competition in the round robin grouping with a dominating performance. Another player from DePaul (Bojana Murisic) was the victim of Sopel's excellent play as Sopel cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Freshman Katya Zapadalova notched a one-set victory over Western Michigan's Yuka Kobayashi.
Freshman Maria Guerreiro and Senior Brianna Williams improved to 5-0 as doubles partners when they defeated Janet Kim and Lindsay Clark from Yale, 8-4. The tandem just missed out on a 6-0 mark, dropping a tie breaker, 8-9(3), in the second round to DePaul's Gergana Ganeva and Anja Mihaldinec.
The Cream and Crimson continue their play in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Saturday and are set to finish up on Sunday.
