MADISON, Wis. - No. 7 Indiana had a multitude of opportunities to score but in the end the Hoosiers settled for a 0-0 double overtime tie with the Wisconsin Badgers Sunday afternoon a the McClimon Sports Complex in Madison, Wis.
The tie gives IU a 12-4-3 regular season record and 4-0-2 Big Ten ledger. Indiana clinches the Big Ten regular season title outright and will be the No. 1 seed at next weekend's Big Ten Tournament in East Lansing, Mich. Indiana has earned the first-round bye and will play the winner of the Michigan State-Penn State game on Friday at 11 a.m.
Wisconsin (6-6-6, 0-3-3 Big Ten) had the first shot as Victor Diaz took a free kick that IU `keeper Chay Cain was able to reel in. Daniel Kelly sent in a weak roller for the Hoosiers that Alex Horwath picked up for the save.
Cain was forced to come out and block a one-on-one shot from Eric Conklin, preventing what could have been an easy goal for the Badgers with just over 10 minutes gone.
Kevin Noschang had a chance to get the Hoosiers a goal as he sent in a back heel attempt off service from Andy Adlard but the look went just wide as Horwath moved to his right to cover.
At 24:08 Rich Balchan just missed converting a shot across the goal as his attempt to a wide-open back post rolled wide. The play began with a beautifully timed ball from Kelly just beyond the center circle.
Indiana controlled the run of play over the final 20 minutes but was unable to capitalize on several key opportunities. Kelly just missed header off a corner kick with just under five minutes to play but came in just a touch late. Just a minute later, Brad Ring had a hard line drive that Wisconsin's B.J. Goodman cleared off the line for the team save.
IU held a 6-3 advantage in shots over the first period and also had five corner kicks to the Badgers' three.
The opening minutes of the second half were a flurry of activity as Greg Stevning had a header off a corner kick that was deflected into another corner kick. That set off a series of IU shots in front of the Wisconsin net as Ring had a shot blocked by the UW defense. The Hoosiers continued to attack the UW goal and missed another golden opportunity when Kevin Noschang sent his attempt at an open net wide.
Indiana finished with 11 shots in the second half compared to just three for the Badgers. Four of the Hoosiers' attempts came off the foot of Ring.
Eric Alexander took a shot on the run from just beyond the top of the penalty area and while it was able to clear the UW defense the attempt sailed high. Indiana came out of the second-half media timeout firing with both Ring and Wilmarth sending a shot on frame. Ring's shot required a leaping punch over from Horwath.
Cain made the save of the match with 11 minutes left in regulation, punching a free kick from Scott Lorenz over the cross bar as his shot was heading for the upper left. Wisconsin had another free kick attempt from almost the exact same spot with 4:48 to play with Cain again coming up with the save, smothering Lorenz's shot.
The Hoosiers were forced to adjust their lineup in the final four minutes of regulation as defender Charley Traylor was taken down on a tackle and was unable to return. Balchan slid into the unfamiliar role of left back to cover Traylor's absence.
Noschang took a rebound in the first overtime period and put himself in a position to score, but in trying to clear the ball over the Wisconsin defense he put a little bit too much muscle behind the shot as it landed on the track behind the goal.
In the second overtime Alexander had his left-footed shot blocked up Horwath. The ball cleared back to Adlard who sent a header wide.
