BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University athletes claimed 62 Academic All-Big Ten Conference selections for the fall term. Athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better to be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection. A total of 661 fall sports athletes were recognized by the Big Ten across the seven fall sports. All seven sports were represented by the 62 Hoosiers selected.
"We are incredibly proud of what our student-athletes have accomplished in the classroom," Indiana Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan said. "We place a great deal of emphasis on both academic success and competitive excellence at Indiana University and our students continue to raise the bar in both areas."
Two Indiana athletes maintained an unblemished 4.0 GPA, both majoring in Biology. A senior, Kevin Trulock has achieved a 4.0 while playing for the Indiana football team as a kicker. Sophomore Brittney Hacken has maintained her unblemished academic record while playing field hockey for the Hoosiers.
"Indiana University student-athletes continue to achieve at high levels both on the playing field and in the classroom," Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Grace Calhoun said. "We are extremely proud of their accomplishments and we look forward to their continued success as they represent our proud institution."
Austin Starr, a junior for the IU football team, was named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American team in addition to the Big Ten list. He was also recognized for his play by being named an All-Big Ten team selection and a finalist for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award.
The Hoosier cross country teams led the way with 15 honorees, nine on the women's side and six for the men, followed by field hockey and football with twelve selections each. The women's soccer team garnered nine honorees, while the men's soccer team pulled in eight, and the IU volleyball team had five players honored.
