BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - Indiana junior midfielder Brad Ring, junior goalkeeper Chay Cain, sophomore midfielder Eric Alexander and sophomore defender Ofori Sarkodie were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Great Lakes All-Region Team announced Thursday.
Ring, who was also named a second-team All-American by College Soccer News, was named to the region first team after leading the Hoosiers with five goals and six assists (16 points) in 2007. A unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection, Ring tallied two game-winning scores on the season in victories over UIC and Penn State. He was also named one of 15 finalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, given to college soccer's top player.
Cain and Alexander represented the Hoosiers on the second team. Starting all 22 matches in goal, Cain recorded 10 solo shutouts and allowed just 13 goals for a 0.61 goals-against average. The first-team All-Big Ten pick gave up just one goal in league play while recording 86 saves on the season.
Alexander was also a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten honoree after finishing tied for the top spot in goals scored with five. The sophomore was one of five players to start all 22 matches.
Rounding out the selections on the third team was Sarkodie. The first-team All-Big Ten selection started all 21 matches played and helped anchor a defensive line that posted 12 shutouts while allowing just 16 goals. All four Indiana players were first-time honorees.
Out of the 33 players named to the three teams, 15 hailed from Big Ten schools led by four honorees each from Indiana and Northwestern. NCAA College Cup participant Ohio State had three players named to the squads, along with two from Michigan State and one from Michigan and Penn State.
